SAMSUNG Electronics' Channel Chip Solves Digital TV Reception Problem

SEOUL, Korea - August 27, 2000 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. received an outstanding performance grade during a field test by one of America`s renowned broadcast standard watch-dog organizations. In a field test conducted by the Association for Maximum Service Television, Inc. (MSTV) in Washington D.C., Samsung`s second-generation digital TV channel chip-set out-performed first-generation chip-sets in reception, and picture and sound reproduction ability, receiving a quality-satisfaction grade.

Samsung`s new second-generation channel chip performs the most important function in a digital TV. The device receives the signal from the digital TV tuner and restores it to the same quality as it was at the broadcasting station. With such favorable test results of the next generation chip-set, Samsung has strengthened its competitiveness in the digital TV and digital TV chip markets.

The new product is an integration of two separate ICs on a single chip with a built-in analog-to-digital converter. This integration improves operational efficiency and ease of mass production. The Samsung digital TV channel chip sells for US$15-18, or 70% less than the US$50-60 required to buy the conventional two chip-set products.

Moreover, the company already holds a number of patents for core technology related to digital TV reception. Therefore, company officials expect to receive substantial increases in its royalty revenue in the future.

By 2005, digital TV is forecast to have replaced 60% of all analog products in use, with annual demand for digital TVs reaching some 70 million sets. The world market for digital channel chips is forecast to be at least US$700 million in 2005 and to exceed US$1 billion by 2007.
