SAMSUNG Olympic Fun Run Raises A$30,000 for the 2000 Australian Olympic Team

SYDNEY - September 11, 1999 - With nearly a year to go to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, more than 8,000 Australians showed their support for the 2000 Australian Olympic team with their feet today.

They walked and jogged their way around Homebush Bay Olympic site, where many of the streets are named after Australian Olympic legends in the first ever Samsung Olympic Fun Run to be held in Australia.

On behalf of the runners, Samsung Electronics donated $30,000 to the 2000 Australian Olympic Team.

Olympians Chris Fydler and Anna Windsor joined Shelley Iliff (Saturday Disney), and Tim McDonald (Saturday Disney) in the 5K Samsung Olympic Fun Run.

The official male and female race winners were Paul Arthur from Central Coast, (32) completing the course in a time of 14.59 minutes and Belinda Martin from St George, Mortdale (25) in a time of 18.16 minutes.

Paul, a former winner of the City To Surf said, "It's a great community event for Australians to get behind our Olympians and it's a great way for us to show them how much we appreciate their effort and hard work."
Hardly puffing at the finish line, Belinda said, "This was a fantastic opportunity to feel the Olympic spirit and it was great to see the Olympic Park and venue for the 2000 Games."

Five of the fun runners won the chance to talk live to Olympians Susie O'Neill, Duncan Armstrong, Ian Thorpe, Daniel Kowalski and Alyson Annan. The Olympians rang the fun runners to wish them good luck and to thank them for their support.

The event patron and running legend Herb Elliott said: "Australians showed with their feet today their support and excitement for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the 2000 Australian Olympic Team.

"Samsung had pledged to donate money for each participant and donated $30,000 towards the cost of preparation, participation and recognition of our Olympic athletes."

Samsung is a worldwide Olympic Partner and Wireless Communications Partner to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Since 1995 the company has been organising running festivals in the markets in which it operates to raise awareness and funds in support of local causes.

"At Samsung we are proud of our involvement with the Olympic movement as it consolidates our belief that sport has a major role to play in unifying the people of the world," said Mr IL-Hyung Chang, Vice President and Head of Olympic Projects, Samsung Electronics.

"Since our first Fun Run event took place in Hungary in 1995 we have created similar events throughout Central Europe and in Asia to help raise awareness of global issues and to raise funds for specific organisations and appeals.

"This year we are holding events for the first time in Australia and in the United States on the same day, September 11th San Diego will become the first US city to host a Run, (takes place 17 hours after the Sydney Samsung Olympic Fun Run due to international time zones), with participants taking part for the US Olympic Cup, and under the banner "Samsung Run For the Gold".

"Next weekend previous host cities in Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Albania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Croatia will again organise events to raise awareness of the scope of support needed for peace and unity in Central Europe," said Mr. Chang.

All participants in the Homebush Bay event received a free t-shirt and limited edition Olympic pin to commemorate their involvement, and 26 lucky participants won more than $20,000 worth of Samsung products including one state-of-the-art television, five mobile phones, 10 microwave ovens, and 10 VCRs.

In addition, the first 100 early registrants received a limited edition Samsung Olympic Swatch Watch.
