SAMSUNG Corning Exports Color TV Glass Plant to India

Samsung Corning (SSC) signed a contract with Samcor Co. of India to export the technology and facilities for a color TV glass plant.

The plant, which is located in Kota, Rajasthan State (450 km southwest of New Delhi), will be capable of turning out five million funnels for color Braun tubes a year.

As part of the conditions for technology export, SSC will receive 3% of net sales in royalties for six years. In addition, the company will be paid US$10 million for the equipment, engineering support and supply of parts over two years.

The equipment is surplus as a result of a recent plant upgrade in Korea.

Samcor is part of the Samtel Group, one of India's leading electronics companies. Samcor has been making black-and-white TVS but is now moving into the color TV market. SSA will dispatch over 60 engineers to Samcor to provide technical assistance for two years.

Since 1991, Samsung Corning has exported color TV glass plants to Germany, Malaysia, Mexico and China. The company also exported a US$13 million black-and-white TV glass plant to India back in 1993.
