SAMSUNG Develops World`s First 1Gb Flash Memory Prototype

SEOUL, Korea - October 14, 2000 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has developed a 1Gb NAND flash memory prototype that will revolutionize storage media for portable digital products. Company officials revealed that they are the first to apply a 0.15-micron design rule to NAND flash memory.

The 1Gb flash memory chip can store up to 560 SXGA-quality (1,280 x 1,024 pixels) photographs or 32 CD-quality songs. Greater memory capacity has made the new device an ideal storage medium for next-generation portable information products, such as digital cameras, MP3 players, and PDAs.

Samsung Electronics has applied a great deal of its existing DRAM processing technology, such as 0.15-micron design rule and chemical mechanical polishing, to the development of the 1Gb device. The research team consisted of 100 members and the R&D cost totaled KRW20 billion. Samsung developed the 1Gb flash memory prototype in a mere 6-months time and it is 6-months to 1-year ahead of the competition.
The company plans to apply the 0.15-micron process technology to production of 256Mb and 512Mb flash devices, greatly strengthening cost competitiveness. In particular, Samsung Electronics is applying this technology to 128MB SmartMedia(TM) cards. The 512Mb flash memory chip and 128MB SmartMedia(TM) card are scheduled to go into mass production in 2001.
Samsung holds a 40-percent share of the data storage flash memory market. This year, the company`s sales of NAND flash memory devices are expected to total US$200 million and these sales are expected to soar to US$800 million by 2002.

The market for NAND flash memory devices is expanding quickly with the rapid growth of new products such as digital cameras, mobile phones with Internet search and email functions, and MP3 players. This market is expected to grow a whopping 70% a year from US$400 million in 1999 to US$2.2 billion by 2002.
