SAMSUNG, Top 4 Manufacturer of Semiconductors

SEOUL, Korea - January 6, 2000 - Samsung Electronics announced today that it has risen in the ranks of the semiconductor industry from world`s number 6 to world`s number 4 at the end of 1999. Dataquest, an electronics industry research organization, reported that Samsung Electronics achieved sales of $7.095 billion, which is a 49.5% increase from the previous year, in its 1999 world semiconductor preliminary ranking report.

In terms of market share, Samsung was able to grow by 0.9%, rising from 1998 levels of 3.5% to 4.4% at the end of 1999. By strengthening its competitiveness in memory semiconductor chips and vastly improving its System LSI business, Samsung was able to break the Top 5 barrier. It is the first recognition of Samsung`s successful change of face from memory semiconductor manufacturer to general semiconductor manufacturer.

During the semiconductor boom in 1995, Samsung Electronics became the number 6 semiconductor manufacturer. Since then, Samsung`s ranking has fluctuated from 6 to 7. It is the company`s first time to hold the number four seat in the world semiconductor market. The company had originally expected to reach the top 3 by 2005, but with this recent achievement, it now believes that the top 3 position can be reached in 2 to 3 years.
Samsung`s most recent achievement is a result of early development and production of next-generation memory chips, dominance in cost competitiveness and success in becoming first-to-market with new products.
Furthermore, the new ranking results is evidence of Samsung`s success in changing its System LSI product line to high value-added products, such as Alpha CPUs, MCUs (Microcontroller Unit), Merged Memory with Logic chips and telecommunications chips.

According to Dataquest, Intel has maintained its number 1 position with sales of $25.8 billion. Japan`s NEC ($9.2 billion) and Toshiba ($7.6 billion) ranked 2 and 3, respectively. The world semiconductor market has grown 17.6% in 1999, recording total sales of $160.1 billion.
