SAMSUNG Develops High-Speed SDRAM for Graphics

Samsung Electronics has completed development of the world's first synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chip for graphics that operates at 266-MHz. The device also has a 64Mb (x32) capacity and it can support not only graphic images, but also three-dimensional moving pictures. Samsung's 266MHz, 64M SDRAM was developed using 0.17-micron design technology. Four chips are used to make a set with a 128-bit bus. The device can process 4GB of data per second (1GB: 109B). This means it can handle at least 60 frames per second of high-resolution, 3D images (Depth of Complexity 4, 1,024 x 768, 32-bit color). This performance can support any 3D program currently on the market. Because a regular memory chip cannot support a variety of graphic functions, a dedicated device is required. Recently, the computing environment has expanded from the conventional office applications to include multimedia games, DVD, and Internet broadcasting. Thus, the use of high-speed images and 3D graphics has skyrocketed, driving up demand for graphics chips. The operating speed of the graphics memory chip determines how fast the PC can process graphics. Therefore, chip-makers are going all out to develop the fastest devices on the market. Samsung Electronics plans to provide samples of its new device to companies that produce graphics controller chip-sets in June of 2000. Bolstered by the growing market for multimedia PCs, Samsung Electronics expects to sell at least US$300 million worth of its new high-speed graphics chip this year.
