SAMSUNG Electronics Dominates World TFT-LCD Market

SEOUL, Korea, February 17, 2000 - Samsung Electronics is ranked the leading TFT-LCD manufacturer in market share for the second year. According to data recently released by IDC Japan, Samsung Electronics recorded a market share of 18.8%, which was the largest share by one company in this market.

After only 4 years in the TFT-LCD market, Samsung Electronics captured the top position in 1998. Last year, the company achieved an annual TFT-LCD sales growth of 175%, with an annual production volume that was 96% of that for 1998 or 4.2 million panels. With sales of US$2.2 billion, Samsung was able to firmly position itself as the leading company in the industry.

Samsung Electronics started up its new 3.5-generation production line (substrates of 600mm by 720mm) at Chonan, Korea in 1998. At the time, it was assessed as a successful investment one that met the growing demand for larger flat panel displays. Samsung plans to start up a 4th-generation line that can produce 9 14.1-inch TFT-LCDs per glass substrate (substrates of 730mm by 920mm) in the second half of this year.
Samsung Electronics’ success in the TFT-LCD market lies in its ability to make accurate forecasts that are used for decisions concerning capital and R&D investments. In particular, the company’s prediction concerning the trend toward larger screens for notebook PCs resulted in Samsung's focus in production of 14.1-inch screens from last year.

In 2000, the markets for 14.1-inch LCDs for notebook PCs, and 15-inch and 17-inch LCDs for desktop monitors are predicted to surge. Samsung, with its capability to mass-produce large TFT-LCDs, is expected to maintain its strong performance in the foreseeable future.
According to the IDC analysis, the TFT-LCD market will grow at a rate of about 26% this year over last year, reaching 28 million panels.
