SAMSUNG Electronics Opens up The Gigabit Generation - The World`s First 1G DRAM

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (SEC) officially announced today the successful development of a fully working die of 1-gigabit dynamic random access memory (DRAM). Samsung's 1G DRAM, the first gigabit DRAM in the world, has 1,074,000,000 fully working cells. The actual chip can store an amount of information equivalent to over 8,000newspaper pages, 160 books (320,000 two-hundred-word pages), 400 still pictures or 16 hours of audio data.

In a press conference at the company`s Seoul headquarters, Y.W. Lee, President, Semiconductor Business, said that `the 1-gigabit DRAM is expected to play a key role in HDTV (high definition TV) and multimedia products of the future.` Samsung's 1G DRAM adopted high performance 0.18-micron design rules and CMOS process technology suitable for mass producing super-fast, ultra-large-scale integrated circuits with high speed and very low power consumption - basic requirements for next generation portable multimedia products.

In addition to its high density, the 1G DRAM has a power-conserving, low voltage design that accepts voltage sources that range from 1.8V to 2.0V. The new device achieves an operating speed of 30ns (nano seconds) by applying Multi-Bank Synchronous structure in its design. New Redundancy technology was also utilized to improve the yield ratios at mass manufacturing.

Samsung's high density, high speed and low power consumption 1G DRAMs will be first used on future generation PCs and workstations. It will also find its way to other products that require the capability to rapidly process vast amounts of data, such as, video conference systems with interpretation ability, medical systems, satellite telecommunications, personal digital assistants, HDTV, 3-D graphics and other future digital multimedia products.

Samsung Electronics invested 220 billion Won (roughly US$ 272 million) to the 1G DRAM project, employing 120 key researchers for 2 years 5 months. In August 1992, Samstung was the first company to complete the development of a 64M DRAM chip, and just two years later, the company did the same with a 256M DRAM. The latest development, 1G DRAM,reaffirms Samsung's leading technological position in the memory market.

Samsung Electronics expects to lead its rivals for at least 12 months in the development of the 1G DRAM. `We expect to remain in the lead of the world memory product market at least until early in the next century,` said Y.W. Lee. The new device will be commercially available around the turn of the century, with full scale production forecast for around 2005. In addition to being a technology leader, Samsung Electronics also holds the largest market share of the world`s memory market, 15% in 1995. Samsung DRAMs are clearly the world`s number one choice in computer memory.

Samsung Electronics Company, Ltd. (SEC), a $21 billion flagship company of the $87 billion Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures and markets telecommunications & information systems, audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, software tools & semiconductors.
