SAMSUNG Electronics Joins International Consortium for Interactive Digital TV Standards

SEOUL, Korea - April 12, 2000 - Interactive digital TV, which will radically change the concept of "television," is about to become part of the market mainstream. Samsung Electronics has joined four other industry leaders in a consortium to commercialize standards for interactive digital TV broadcasting. Consortium members include a Korean venture company as well as one UK firm and two US companies.

At a press conference in Las Vegas, Samsung officials revealed that they have formed a strategic alliance to commercialize interactive digital TV standards for contents production and delivery as well as security systems required to make interactive digital broadcasting possible.

The consortium members are: (1) Samsung Electronics, manufacturer of interactive digital TVs. (2) Harris, a US maker of broadcasting equipment. (3) NDS, having its head office in UK, involved in systems to safeguard on-line payments for e-commerce transactions. (4) 4DL, a Korean company providing authoring tools to contents producers. (5) SkyStream, a US company with data injection technology. Each company is recognized as a leader in its respective field, and this is the first consortium of its kind to be formed.

The group will cover all aspects of the interactive TV business. This includes interactive data delivery methods and reception formats, and systems for e-commerce and on-line payment. By coming together, all five companies will accelerate their individual efforts to commercialize standards. As a result, interactive TV is now expected to make its debut by the end of this year.

The consortium members will now pool their development efforts and expect to have a pilot service ready in the first half of this year. They then plan to jointly supply the service to broadcasting companies and work together with them to commercialize the service.

Commercializing digital broadcasting standards and forming a team of industry leaders is a "win-win" strategy for all parties. Each member will gain an edge on its competitors and establish itself as the leader in its respective market.

The standards promoted by the consortium stand a strong chance of being used by broadcasters and contents producers. Samsung Electronics officials expect that their company will be in a position to supply virtually all interactive digital TVs and set-top boxes to the broadcasting companies and contents producers.

The technology belonging to Samsung Electronics and the other consortium members will be brought together to complete system development by this May. A nationwide network will be established in the United States, and contacts made with broadcasters so that e-commerce service can be demonstrated in May . Then in June, cooperative ties can begin to be forged with broadcasters and contents producers regarding commercial service
