SAMSUNG SDI Develops the "Ultra-slim and Flat CRT"

Samsung SDI announced on June 8 the development of the 32-inch ultra-slim flat CRT for TVs, which is significantly lighter and thinner than conventional CRTs. According to Samsung SDI, Sony's 32-inch flat CRT for TVs is 517mm in depth and weighs 49kg, whereas the ultra-slim CRT developed by Samsung SDI has a depth of 417mm and weighs 44kg, a reduction of 100mm in depth and 5kg in weight. The company stated that it took two years to develop the new product with ₩19billion in R&D investment and 70 dedicated research personnel. It also added that a total of 154 domestic and overseas patents were secured during the development process. The patents are for independently developed core technology related to high efficiency wide-angle pyramid DY, high capacity electron gun and Advanced Tension Optimized Mask(ATOM). Samsung SDI plans to start mass production next year with a monthly capacity of 30,000 units. In addition, the depth reduction technology will be applied to the full range of CRTs for both monitors and TVs. Samsung SDI's CEO, Soon-Taek Kim said, "This is the first time that the depth of conventional CRTs has been reduced by 100mm. The development is a turning point in depth related technology, which is very important for consumer displays." The company added that it had also developed the 34-inch super-large size flat CRT, which is the largest in Korea with a 30% improvement in resolution and 20% reduction in power consumption.
