H.M. King Juan Carlos I Officially Inaugurates the SAMSUNG Mobile Telephone Factory

Barcelona, June 20, 2000.- H.M. King Juan Carlos I today officially inaugurates the new Samsung mobile telephone plant in Palau de Plegamans (Barcelona). During the act the monarch will visit the new installations and the first production lines, which have been in operation since the beginning of the year.

The first mobile telephone units made totally in Spain left the plant at the beginning of the year. Production is expected to reach 7,500,000 units by the year 2002. With this project, Samsung demonstrates once again the interest of the multinational in our country and wagers on the future of the digital market and mobile telephones in Spain and Europe.

The first terminals to be produced are models GSM SGH-600 and Dual Band SGH-2400, with two production lines operating initially. Subsequently, depending on market demand, production will be completed with other models.
Fourth manufacturer in the world
With the launching of this factory, the newest mobile telephone technology of the moment arrives in Spain, which Samsung has developed as fourth manufacturer in the world in number of units; a state-of-the-art technology that will arrive in the form of top-range terminals, 20% of whose production will be distributed in Spain and 80% in Europe. Our country will thereby become one of the European countries that export latest-generation technology through mobile telephones.

Global investment foreseen for the development of this project is 10,000 million pesetas and will employ more than 1,000 workers, from now to the year 2002. The process of adaptation of the plant in this period contemplates the installation of 11 mobile telephone production lines, as well as the renovation of the already existing video and tele-video lines, with sights also placed on the manufacture of DVDs in the near future.

Strategic decision
In 1999 the number of Spanish mobile telephone lines surpassed 14 million terminals and in this first quarter has reached 19 million, exceeding the number of fixed lines. That is, Spain is one of the countries in Europe that presents the highest mobile telephone growth expectations.

In the face of the spectacular growth of the mobile telephone market in Europe, Samsung Electronics has decided to situate itself in a preferential place. The magnificent results that the Spanish plant has offered -which situate it as one of the most productive inside the firm at the world level- as well as the excellent mobile telephone market growth expectations in Spain and Europe, have led Samsung Electronics to reach this strategic decision of great importance for the future of the mobile telephone market.
