SAMSUNG Electronics Selected "Best Supplier" by Compaq

SEOUL, Korea - June 28, 2000 - Compaq Computer Corporation recognized Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. as its best supplier out of over 2,000 computer parts manufacturers that do business with the computer giant. Compaq Chairman Michael Capellas presented his company's "Best Supplier Award" for 1999 to Samsung Electronics President and CEO Yoon-Woo Lee at a ceremony held in Houston. The evaluation system encompasses six major categories: price, quality, supply capability, technological expertise, flexibility and on-going improvement. The award honors outstanding contributions to Compaq during the previous year only, and it gives official recognition of the supplier's competitiveness. Since the establishment of Compaq, only 10 companies have been awarded this recognition. Compaq's strict system for assessing its Best Supplier makes the award an important indicator that other large computer makers heed to. Therefore, competition is keen among parts suppliers to obtain the Compaq award. This year, the award went to both Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology, Inc. Samsung Electronics received maximum scores for quality and technological expertise for its semiconductor, TFT-LCD and monitor products. This is the first time ever that a supplier of multiple components has managed to edge out a supplier specializing in one category of parts to win the coveted award. This distinction has bolstered Samsung's position as the world market share leader for these three products. Items supplied to Compaq by Samsung include DRAMs and other memory chips, 14.1-inch and 15-inch TFT-LCDs for notebook PCs and monitors for desktop PCs. By winning the Best Supplier Award for 1999, Samsung has strengthened its strategic partnership with Compaq, and Samsung officials expect parts exports to Compaq to reach US$2 billion in 2000, a 70% jump over 1999. The company aims to use its technological and marketing strengths to boost parts supply volumes to other major PC makers as well. About Samsung Electronics Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., with 1999 sales revenue of US$22.8 billion, is a world leader in the electronics industry.
