SAMSUNG Electronics Dominates World TFT-LCD Market

SEOUL, Korea - July 4, 2000 - A TFT-LCD market survey conducted by IDC Japan reveals that Samsung Electronics with a 20.54% market share in the first-half of 2000, will achieve the highest year-on-year increase of any company, strengthening its position as the leader of the world TFT-LCD market.

The world market share enjoyed by Korean TFT-LCD makers increased from 37.48% during the first-half of 1999 to 37.99% during the same period this year. Conversely, Japan's market share dropped from 62.51% to 56.07%. Taiwanese makers represented 5.94% of all TFT-LCDs sold.

Since its debut in 1995, Samsung Electronics was able to achieve the leading position in the TFT-LCD in 4 short years, becoming the top supplier in 1998. In 1999, the company retained its market leading position, achieving a 96% increase in units produced and 175% growth in sales revenues year on year. Samsung's sales and production targets for this year is US$3 billion and 6.5 million units, respectively. With these results, the company expects to retain its status in the market 3 years running.

In 1998, Samsung's third production line in Chonan, Korea began production of TFT-LCD substrates measuring 600mm by 700mm-a line considered to be between third- and fourth-generation. Samsung's investment in larger-screen models was very well timed and enabled the company to dominate this market segment. Samsung is scheduled to start up a fourth-generation (730mm by 920mm) production line in the second half of 2000. One of these substrates can be made into nine 14.1-inch TFT-LCDs or four 21.3-inch TFT-LCDs. This capability will further strengthen Samsung's position as the leading producer of large-screen TFT-LCDs.

Samsung's success is considered to be the result of insightful investment ahead of the competition and a strong R&D program. Samsung correctly predicted that the market trends would favor larger-screen TFT-LCDs, and the company focused its strategic marketing efforts on 14.1-inch, 15-inch and 17-inch models.

According to IDC, the world market for TFT-LCDs will reach 30 million units in 2000, a 36% increase over 1999. After Samsung Electronics, LG?hilips LCD, Hitachi, Sharp and NEC complete the top 5 with market shares of 15.02%, 11.16%, 8.57% and 8.02%, respectively.
