SAMSUNG Begins Operation at New TFT-LCD Line

SEOUL, Korea - August 16, 2000 - Samsung Electronics announced today that it has officially begun production at its new 4th generation TFT-LCD line (substrate size: 730mm x 920mm) in Chonan, Korea. The world`s number 1 TFT-LCD company will be capable of producing 1.2 million 14.1-inch LCD panels per month. The capacity of line 4 alone is 270,000 14.1-inch panels and it will further increase to 540,000 panels in 2001.

The new addition of line 4 will further strengthen Samsung`s position as the number 1 producer of TFT-LCDs by increasing total LCD capacity of 14.1-inch panels to 8 million this year and 15 million next year.

Samsung can divide one 4th generation glass substrate into nine 14.1-inch TFT-LCDs, six 17-inch TFT-LCDs or four 21.3-inch TFT-LCDs. The opening of line 4 was well-timed in that Samsung is able to respond to the market`s demand for larger LCDs. Currently, the 14.1-inch LCD panel is the mainstay of the market.

According to market research company IDC, the market for 14.1-inch LCD panels composed 36% of the entire market for LCD panels in notebook PCs last year. This figure will increase to 52% and 58% this year and next year, respectively.
Vice President Wonkie Chang, head of Chonan production complex says, `Samsung continues to receive long-term contracts for high-quality, large-size LCD panels. In particular, the demand is felt more keenly with 14.1-inch panels and Samsung is operating its lines at full capacity to fill orders.? He adds, `An automation system was introduced to line 4 reducing production time by 40% and decreasing the number of defects.?

In 1998, Samsung was the first in the industry to begin production at a 3.5 generation LCD line (substrate size: 600mm x 720mm). The move to a 3.5 generation line helped Samsung become the number 1 company in the LCD market in 1998. Samsung expects to maintain its position with the start of operations at its Line 4. Furthermore, Samsung will begin construction of a 5th generation line at the end of this year.

Last year Samsung recorded TFT-LCD sales of US$2.2 billion. This year, the company expects to increase this figure by 30% to record sales of US$3 billion. It also aims to control 22% of the world TFT-LCD market.
