SAMSUNG SDS to Set Up a GIS Joint Venture

Samsung SDS is to provide location service by joining hands with Centraxx of Canada, a global leading GIS (Geographic Information System) company. Samsung SDS announced on August 23 that its GIS department and Centraxx of Canada signed an agreement under which the two companies will establish Centraxx Korea, a GIS joint venture. Combining Samsung SDS' know-how and experiences accumulated through building various geographic information systems with the technologies of Centraxx, the new joint venture company is designed to develop and provide a variety of content using GIS. Centraxx Korea plans to launch auto rescue and location services, ensuring smooth operation through two-way communications between controllers installed across the nation and TAG attached to mobile objects. A central information control center will manage all the communications between them. The central information control center provides location information via Internet by storing and managing all the detailed location information received from base stations distributed across the nation. The venture firm is able to provide more accurate location information at an affordable price and two way communications service by using Uni-Point technology for locating moving objects. The company plans to establish 800 base stations across the nation by next year and launch a test service operation, locating delivery service vehicles and stolen cars, and supporting rescue activities. "GIS is emerging as a promising technology in the IT sector. The technology can be used for locating moving objects including cars and missing persons, helping rescue cars and responding to crises and disasters," explains an official of Samsung SDS. "It can also be applied to developing intelligent traffic systems, preserving the environment and more." "The wireless data communications business is expected to significantly expand based on a variety of content using GIS technology," he added. "Centraxx Korea will expand its business to provide content-oriented services for disaster and crisis management, environmental monitoring, and locating missing persons as well as car rescue and logistics location services by 2003, when the company hopes to record $35 million in revenue in car rescue service alone." Centraxx Inc., founded in 1995 and headquartered in Canada, is a world-leading GIS company. Centraxx is listed on the Nasdaq and has an American patent for the Uni-Point technology. The company performs especially well in the North American market.
