SAMSUNG Opens Largest Athlete and Public Entertainment Venue in Olympic Rendezvous @ SAMSUNG And Signs up for Salt Lake 2002 and Athens 2004

9:00am, Sunday 10 September - Sydney Olympic Park, Australia Worldwide Olympic Partner Samsung Electronics unveiled today the centrepiece of its US$200 million global marketing campaign the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, and signed an agreement to continue its sponsorship for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Games and the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. The 4,000 square-metre Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung will be a safe and secure haven for athletes participating in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games where they can spend quality time with families and friends. Visitors to Sydney Olympic Park will also be able to enjoy the public areas of Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung which will feature live daily entertainment (bands and cultural performances); a technology showcase displaying Samsung's futuristic mobile phones and many opportunities to see athletes on stage for special presentations and appearances. According to Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics Mr Jong-Yong Yun: "We want Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung to be a meeting place for the world to gather and celebrate what is a unique experience - the Olympic Games. We are proud to be able to bring people together for this celebration." At night the venue will be transformed into a spectacle of sight and sound. The fabric sails that surround the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung will be lit to dramatic effect, the entire pavilion looking like an animated flame. Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung will be an impressive landmark on the Sydney Olympic skyline. Opening to the public on 15 September and running for the duration of the Games, most areas of the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung will operate between 7.30am and 11.30pm and will host some 600,000 visitors. Following the opening ceremony in the Rendezvous Plaza area of the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, guests were invited to view some of the entertainment on offer at the venue, followed by a formal signing of The Olympic Program sponsorship agreement (TOP V). Mr Yun said Samsung's decision to renew its sponsorship as the Worldwide Partner in the Wireless Communications Equipment category was based on the successful partnership that had been forged between Samsung and the Olympic Movement. In addition, association with the Olympics resulted in direct business benefits for Samsung. For example Olympic promotions have led to in some markets (US) a 311% increase in sales of Samsung mobile phones. Samsung has demonstrated its ability to assist in the success of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games through its leading edge telecommunications equipment, and in return the Olympic Games has provided a global platform to leverage the Company's key business strategies for the 21st century. Currently the fourth largest producer of mobile phones in the world, Samsung's goal is to grow their telecommunications brand to become one of the top three brands by 2001. Mr Yun explained "The Olympic tradition has transcended political and social conflicts and is still embraced by the world's nations as a forum that reflects a brighter youthful future. Its immeasurable value lies in its ability to transcend cultures, race, religion and gender and bring together people in peaceful competition. We are proud to be able to continue our commitment". Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung is located on the corner of Sarah Durack Avenue and Olympic Boulevard, only minutes from the main stadium and close to Olympic Park station.
