SAMSUNG Electronics Sets Environmental Benchmark With New Greenfreeze Technology at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games

SYDNEY, Australia - September 19th, 2000 - As part of the company# worldwide environmental programme, Samsung Electronics, Worldwide Olympic Partner and Official Whitegoods partner to the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG), is announcing its move towards more environmentally friendly refrigerators in the Australian market. The move will follow the successful completion of a pilot scheme that is being undertaken at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Following advice from Greenpeace and SOCOG on the need to replace Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with environmentally friendly solutions in refrigeration, Samsung is supplying 320-litre bottom-mount refrigerators (model SRL36NEB) containing greenfreeze refrigerant, R600a, throughout Olympic venues and the media village. R600a is a natural refrigeration gas which can replace HFC134a, currently used in the majority of Australian refrigerators, but has a zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and zero Global Warming Potential (GWP). Currently available in Europe, the refrigerators will be the largest greenfreeze refrigerators in Australia when they become commercially available in November 2000.

In addition to the large-sized appliances, Samsung has set a strong environmental benchmark by trialing a quantity of 49-litre and 95-litre bar refrigerators, also charged with R600a refrigerant, at selected sites throughout the Olympic precinct. Pending the successful completion of the trial and Australian standards approval, Samsung has committed to accelerate its plans for exclusive importation of R600a bar refrigerators into Australia from August 2001.
#he trial of Samsung# greenfreeze technology is a measure of how high environmental standards are providing a positive environmental legacy for the world,#commented John Barratt, Senior Product Manager at Samsung Electronics Australia. #e have acquired valuable new environmental knowledge and practices from our experience with the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and in particular from our close partnership with SOCOG.#

Barratt continued, #amsung# move to incorporating more benign refrigerant gases into family-sized refrigerators provides a lead for other manufacturers to follow.#

Corin Millais, Head of Olympics Campaign at Greenpeace, advised, #FCs are one of the most potent greenhouse gases invented. Greenpeace believes the refrigeration industry must abandon HFCs and move to environmentally friendly alternatives.#

#he Sydney 2000 Games has set new environmental benchmarks in integrating the environment into the business of staging large events such as the Olympic Games,#commented Peter Ottesen, Program Manager, Environment, at SOCOG. #e congratulate the efforts of corporations such as Samsung in helping to make our environmental vision a reality.#
