SAMSUNG Raises Over AUD $140,000 for Olympic AID, Donates 100 Olympic Games Mobile Phones and Michael Johnson Throws in His Gold Shoe

Sydney, September 28th 2000 -- American 400 metre Gold medallist track superstar, Michael Johnson today donated one of his golden track shoes to Olympic Aid during the presentation of a AUD $142,337.65 cheque to Olympic Aid, from Worldwide Olympic Partner, Samsung Electronics. The presentation, which took place at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung in Sydney Olympic Park, included 100 Olympic Games mobile telephones worth AUD $63,550(US$41,000) to Olympic Aid.

The money has been raised from memorabilia auctions to date that have taken place daily at Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung and which will continue until October 1. Many of the world# top athletes have contributed to the money raised by donating and signing personal items.

Fans have picked up some real bargains. One lucky fan walked away with a signed photograph of Grant Hackett for AUD $2550 an hour after his 1500 metre gold medal swim. An Australian Olympic Committee Olympic flag, signed by the Australian Swim Team (including Ian Thorpe and Susie O#eill) fetched AUD$20,000, while a Samsung #ountdown#T-shirt signed by the fastest man on Earth, Maurice Greene went for AUD$5,000.

Vice President and Head of Olympic Projects for Samsung Electronics, Mr Il-Hyung Chang, presented the cheque to Olympic Aid# founder and chairman Johann Olav Koss. Mr Koss, Norway# four-time gold medallist speed skater, founded Olympic Aid in 1994 which has since raised over US$31 million for children in need around the world.

One of Michael Johnson# golden track shoes has been donated to Olympic Aid and will be auctioned to raise further funds.

Samsung# support for the Olympics also includes the Samsung Athletes#Family Host 2000 program. The program provides free food and accommodation to the families of competing overseas athletes who otherwise would not be able to support their loved ones in person, at the Games.

The program has enabled nearly 1,500 athlete family members from 123 countries to come to Sydney. They have been hosted for an average of eight days each by nearly 1000 Sydneysiders, all of whom have given their hospitality free.

Speaking on the Samsung Athletes#Family Host 2000 Program, Mr Chang said: #t is a great honour for Samsung to be able to provide the Family Host program. The Olympic Games is the climax of every athletes career, a career they would not have without the continued support of their close family. It is therefore very important to these athletes that their families are able to come to Sydney to support them. Samsung salutes the Sydney families that have given their hospitality so freely.#

Samsung is also supporting the athletes by providing the Athletes Centre at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung. The centre is the only place within Sydney Olympic Park where the athletes can kick back and relax with their family and friends away from fans and the media. This facility has proved tremendously successful - more than 7,000 athletes and 17,000 athlete family members registered during the first week. In terms of general spectators, more than 600,000 have attended daily events at the Rendezvous Plaza and experienced the digital technology showcase.
