SAMSUNG Unveils World's Fastest Graphics Memory Chip

SEOUL, Korea - September 29, 2000 - Samsung Electronics has become the first in the industry to develop a 128M double data rate synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR SDRAM) graphics memory chip that operates at 500 megabits per second (Mbps). The new device completely supports moving pictures and three-dimensional images. Graphics memory chips are unique in their functions to support a wide range of graphics functions. As the capacity of these devices increases, more colors can be reproduced and image definition improves. The faster the graphics memory chip, the smoother and faster 3D images appear. As a result, chip makers are competing feverishly to come out with the fastest, highest capacity graphics memory chips. Samsung Electronics has applied the DDR format to improve the performance of its graphics memory chip by two and a half times. Therefore, the new chip delivers outstanding reproductions of 3D imagery. The company expects the device to be enthusiastically received by makers of computer games and high-performance PCs. In addition, Samsung used a 0.17-micron design rule, enabling the device to process 8 gigabytes of data per second. This means that 60 frames are shown each second with a clarity that is three times better than the resolution of conventional TVs. Samsung Electronics plans to deliver samples of its new high-speed graphics memory device to the world's leading makers of graphics chip sets. The company has established a competitive edge in new product development and expects to maintain at least 40% of the world market share for graphics memory. Demand for graphics memory is skyrocketing along with the explosive growth of the Internet and the use of multimedia products that include moving pictures. Samsung Electronics expects sales of its high-speed 500Mbps 128M DDR SDRAM to surpass US$700 million next year.
