SAMSUNG Unveils TFT-LCD with Record-breaking Definition

SEOUL, Korea #November 27, 2000 #amsung Electronics has become the world# first company to develop a 28-inch thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) with 4.19 million pixels (2,048 x 2,048). The new product, which is expected to set new industry trends in display definition and size, will be put on the market this month.

TFT-LCD production becomes increasingly difficult as the panels get larger and gain more pixels. Samsung Electronics has become the first ever to place 1,679 pixels in one square centimeter of TFT-LCD panel.

The new Samsung TFT-LCD is a 28-inch square panel and is expected to be well suited for applications in the aerospace and defense industries, expanding the company# involvement in the market for large-screen TFT-LCDs. Currently, Samsung supplies large-size TFT-LCDs for notebook PCs, desktop monitors and digital TVs.
Samsung Electronics has signed a 3-year exclusive supplier agreement with BarcoView, a Belgian company that specializes in high-resolution displays for the aerospace and defense applications. BarcoView, which currently uses high-definition cathode-ray-tube (CRT) displays, helped to fund Samsung Electronics development of a TFT-LCD model that can meet the strict requirements.

This is the first time that a Korean TFT-LCD maker has received such R&D support, testimony to Samsung# high product quality and technology sophistication. Samsung Electronics has remained the world# top producer of TFT-LCDs for the past two years.

The launch of Samsung# new high-definition display signals the transition from CRT to TFT-LCD for the aerospace and defense industries. By 2003, TFT-LCDs are expected to occupy 50 to 60 percent of the aviation display market. TFT-LCDs are also forecast to be applied in such fields as medical equipment and computerized design systems.

Samsung Electronics predicts its TFT-LCD business to achieve US$3 billion in sales this year, a 30% increase from the 1999 figure. Having completed development of 2-inch low-temperature polymer TFT-LCDs for IMT-2000 handsets and 6.6-inch products for electronic books, the company is also going after new markets for small TFT-LCD applications.

Samsung Electronics, with its high product quality and technology development capabilities, aims to be the world# leading maker of TFT-LCDs in four categories--notebook PCs, desktop monitors, LCD TVs and small products#y 2005.
