SAMSUNG Electronics Signs on as Worldwide Olympic Partner through Year 2000

"The Olympic Spirit of world peace and contributions to society is at one with Samsung's ideals," said Samsung Group Chairman Kun-Hee Lee at a signing ceremony in Seoul today. "We are particularly honored to support the Olympic Games as the world enters the next Millennium. From this time forward, the Olympic Movement will become an active part of Samsung's corporate spirit."

To provide officials, athletes, media, staff, volunteers and visitors with fast, reliable and flexible communications at the Olympic Games, Samsung will be the official supplier of wireless communications, including the following systems and terminals: mobile cellular telephone; personal communication systems (PCS); wireless local loop (WLL); future public land mobile telephone (FPLMT); global mobile personal communication service (GMPCS); digital European cordless telecommunication (DECT) and point-to-point radio-frequency-based paging equipment and controllers.
IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch said at the ceremony, "Samsung Electronics' state-of-the-art wireless communications technology and support will be a valuable asset to the Nagano and Sydney Olympic Games. We are proud to welcome Samsung's 230,000 employees worldwide to the Olympic Movement, mankind's largest celebration that transcends all barriers of race, politics, and religion."

Samsung intends to leverage its TOP IV sponsorship to raise global awareness of its unparalleled wireless technology. The sponsorship supports Samsung's strategy to globalize its mobile telecommunications business, with a concentration on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) handsets and systems. CDMA is a fast emerging next-generation technology for digital-mobile networks around the world, including the U.S. and Japan as well as emerging markets such as China.

Samsung plans to use the Olympic marks in relation to wireless communications products, direct advertising, and other promotional materials. It will also seek to develop Olympic-related events and marketing programs with various members of the Olympic family.

Samsung & Sports

According to Samsung Chairman Kun-Hee Lee, "Sports, regardless of one's gender, nationality or religion, help unite people in peace and happiness. For me, sports have been one of the cornerstones of my happiness and my business philosophy."

Samsung Group has a long tradition of involvement in sports. Samsung owns 17 sports teams, ranging from baseball to badminton, and sponsors athletic associations and competitions around the globe.

In addition to TOP IV Olympic sponsorship, Samsung's international sports sponsorships include: Official Consumer Electronics Partner for the '98 Bangkok Asian Games; Samsung Nations Cup international equestrian show jumping competition from '97 through '99, Korean sponsor of the '96 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games; and Official Sponsor for the '94 Hiroshima Asian Games.
