SAMSUNG Electronics Introduces the IZZI web at 2001 ICES

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, USA - January 6, 2001 - Samsung Electronics, the world's number 1 manufacturer of memory chips, and Microsoft Corp. exhibited the IZZI web at the International Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9. Samsung's IZZI web is a wireless device that gives users instant and easy access to the Internet.

It is a new kind of Internet appliance that consists of a handheld unit with a 10.4-inch liquid crystal display, wireless keyboard, base station, and access point that can be connected to a phone line or a high-speed Internet cable access. Bluetooth or Samsung's own wireless LAN technologies are used for unrestricted wireless operations between the access point and handheld unit.

Samsung's IZZI web is based on Windows CE 3.0, an embedded operating system for 32-bit connected devices that demand rich applications and Internet services. The IZZI web is powered by a National Semiconductor 200MHz CPU. It comes with a 32MB memory for system temporary data and a touch-sensitive panel makes it easy for almost anyone to use.

"Windows CE 3.0 is becoming the platform of choice for OEMs who are developing rich, connected embedded client devices such as the Samsung IZZI web," said Keith White, director of the Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group at Microsoft. "Consumer electronic giants such as Samsung are taking advantage of the rich multimedia and browsing functionality provided by Windows CE 3.0 to build these new and innovative devices.
In addition, the user can treat it like any other consumer electronics product, as an on/off power switch is provided for quick access. Furthermore, the device does not have to be booted up the way other computers do.

Youngha Lee, director and general manager of the Internet Computing team at Samsung Electronics states, "In line with our slogan Samsung DIGITall, Everyone's Invited, Samsung Electronics will continue to make digital and Internet-related products, such as the IZZI web, that are easy to use by everyone."

Once commercialized, this device will be used in a variety of ways. In the home, the device can be connected to the home network in order for users to control functions of various products linked to the network in any place in the home. It can also be used by businesses in order to provide easy access to corporate and product information at point of sales. It will become an indispensable portable Internet access device for e-life.

The web tablet market will surge with the growth of information infrastructure and greater use of home networking environments. According to IDC, an international research company, this new device is expected to be launched this year and rise to over 1 million units in 2004.
