SAMSUNG Unveils Digital Home Network Solution at 2001 ICES

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, USA January 6, 2001 - Samsung Electronics unveils the industry's first home network solution that provides connectivity and control to various home networks that connect appliances and Internet devices. The Samsung Digital Home Network Solution is a user-friendly interface scheme that utilizes web-based Internet Standard http protocols for open access. This total solution for the future digital home offers seamless connectivity of wired and wireless home devices without major installment hassles.

Imagine yourself watching an exciting basketball game on a wide-screen digital TV and relaxing on your living room sofa. Your doorbell rings, and automatically a video image of your guest that is taken by the web-video camera outside your front door appears on the upper right hand corner of the TV screen. Without leaving your seat, you can see who is at your door and click the "Open" icon on the screen to let your guest in. This is one of the many exciting digital home networking features enabled by Samsung technology.

Samsung's Home Network Solution consists of a low-cost home gateway to provide automated home network management and a "Brouter" (a combination bridge and router) to provide connectivity between the application dependent device clusters such as audio and video devices over IEEE1394, home appliances over power line communications, PC-like devices over Ethernet or HomePNA (Home Phoneline Network Alliance), and portable devices over Bluetooth. As a result, Samsung's home network solution is truly modular and scalable to various home environments.
Samsung's digital home network solution demonstrates "true seamless connectivity" at home with broadband Internet services. In addition, its mobile Internet terminal, dubbed IZZI web, provides easy user access to any device from anywhere in the home by integrating the latest wireless technology, such as Bluetooth or Wireless LAN.

Dr. K.W. Lee, senior vice president and general manager of the Corporate R&D Center at Samsung Electronics states, "In recent years, the availability of broadband services to the home, rapid penetration of digital multimedia consumer electronics devices, and universality of the Internet all has triggered strong consumer demand for home networking. Previously proposed home networking solutions came short of consumer expectations because of their focus on limited device-dependent networking issues instead of solving the issue of global connectivity. Our solution offers a total solution for the future digital home by seamlessly connecting major wired and wireless home devices without the headache of sorting through a networking mess."

He adds, "I strongly believe that the new era of networked consumer electronics will bring many exciting new business opportunities to companies who are first to market with networking capabilities. Samsung is ready for the new digital home era. Samsung is committed to advancing its digital home networking technology as well as developing network-enabling multimedia consumer electronics products."

An operational proto-type of Samsung's Digital Home Network Solution will be shown for the first time at the International Consumer Electronics Show (2001 ICES), which opens in Las Vegas from January 6 to 9. Under the title "Samsung Digital Home", it will demonstrate a home network system that connects the digital TV, Cable STB and other A/V products in the living room, another network that connects the PC to other IT products in the home office and a third network that links the refrigerator, microwave oven and other home appliances in the kitchen.

According to Instat, the home network market will grow ten-fold from $600 million in 2000 to $5.7 billion in 2004.
