.Initial supply was 3,659 kilometers.
.Samsung is to supply 84% of the 7,500 km total for the project.
.Samsung has the ?reen light?to advance into the rest of the Eastern Europe telecommunications infrastructure market.

(Seoul) - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) was recently selected to supply 2,649 kilometers of optical cable, worth US$ 8 million, to the Czech Republic. SEC Information Systems Division Chief, Mr. Yong Bok Lee, and SPT Telecom President, Mr. Novak, were in Prague February 2 to sign the supply agreement.

Samsung Electronics has already completed supply of 3,659 kilometers of optical cable to the Czech Republic last year, so with the signing ceremony of the second agreement. Samsung will supply a total of 6,308 kilometers, or 84% of the total 7,500 kilometers to have been laid in that East European country.

Other companies participating in the tender for the additional supply contract were: AT&T (US), Alcatel (France), Siemens (Germany) and a local company. Samsung was selected in just 12 days after the bids were submitted, making this one of the shortest international tender ever.

This project is unprecedented in that SPT Telecom finalized the contract using only its capital and not relying on outside sources such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for funds.

According to Samsung Electronics?spokesperson, ?he short time it took for the Czech Telecommunications Ministry to make its final selection in this tender is testimony to Samsung? exceptional product quality, includind the ltra-low-loss maintenance?technology, that has allowed the company to satisfy very demanding European standards.

SPT Telecom, in a move to privatize operations, sold 27% of its stock, worth US$ 1.45 billion, to the Telsource Consortium (consisting of Netherlands PTT and Swissr Telecom). The company since then has rationalized operations and is now playing a pivotal role in the modernization of the Czech telecommunications network.

Since 1992, the number of people in the Czech Republic with telephones has increased about 10% a year. The government plans to spend US$ 4.48 billion over the next five years on upgrading its telecommunications infrastructure.

Samsung Electronics plans to take advantage of its close ties with SPT Telecom in supplying optical cable to move into the supply of automatic switching systems, worth tens of millions of dollars. The Czech Republic can also serve as a bridgehead into the rest of the Eastern European telecommunications market for Samsung.

The company officials believe that the new supply contract in the Czech republic will mean more business opportunities in Finland, Poland, and Macedonia. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has also been selected as the
first foreign supplier of cable by Norway Telecom. According to the company spokesperson, ?rospects look bright for Samsung-made telecommunications equipment in this part of the world.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$ 21 billion flagship company of Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in the electronics sector, with operations in more than 70 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets audio and video products, household electronics goods, computers & peripheral products, display products, telecommunication & information systems, software tools & semiconductors.
