SAMSUNG Dominates World TFT-LCD Market for Third Consecutive Year

SEOUL, Korea - January 15, 2001 - A TFT-LCD (thin film transistor-liquid crystal display) market survey conducted by market research company IDC Japan reveals that Samsung Electronics with a 20.1% market share at the end of 2000 maintained its leading position in the world TFT-LCD market for the third consecutive year.
In particular, Samsung is the only manufacturer in the top five to increase its market share. Samsung had recorded a market share of 18.8% in 1999. In 2000, the company widened the gap between it and the second rank company from 2.3% to 5.4%.
Although many new-comers to the LCD business, such as the Taiwanese manufacturers, are finding it hard to create margins during the recent price decline of TFT-LCDs, Samsung Electronics, who was first to market a variety of large-size LCD products, was able to maintain its stronghold of the market through its price competitiveness.
Samsung's success is considered to be the result of insightful investment ahead of the competition and a strong R&D program. Samsung correctly predicted that the market trends would favor larger-screen TFT-LCDs. In particular, the company's decision to focus on 14.1-inch LCDs for notebook PCs proved to be effective.
In 1998, Samsung's third production line in Chonan, Korea began production of TFT-LCD substrates measuring 600mm by 700mm-a line considered to be between third- and fourth-generation. In addition, Samsung began operations at a fourth-generation (730mm by 920mm) production line that can produce 9 14.1-inch LCDs per substrate in the second half of 2000.
This year, the TFT-LCD market mainstay will shift from 14.1-inch LCDs for notebook PCs to 17-inch LCDs for desktop monitors. It is expected that Samsung's lead in the LCD market will continue as the company focuses its efforts in building more efficient production lines.
According to IDC, the world market for TFT-LCDs will reach 46 million units in 2001, a 48% increase over 2000.
