SAMSUNG Electronics Strives to Overcome IC Electromagnetic Emissions

Seoul, Korea, July 11, 1997 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that strict electromagnetic emissions regulations around the world have had a major impact on electronic product exports. In response, Samsung Electronics Co. has launched Korea's first research into electromagnetic interference that covers even semiconductors.

Samsung Electronics has invested W1 billion to build an EMI/EMS testing lab that is equipped with GTEM cells and other state-of-the-art facilities for testing everything from parts and components to finished products. The new lab is capable of measuring electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS), static electricity levels and electromagnetic waves generated by sudden changes in either voltage or amperage. The facility can satisfy both International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) and Commission International Special des Perturbantions Radioelectriques (CISPR) criteria.

As regulations around the world concerning EMI and EMS are getting progressively stricter, the volume of electromagnetic emissions generated by semiconductors is increasing. At the same time, external electromagnetic emissions are increasingly interfering with the operation of semiconductors as a result of ever-greater integration, ever-faster processing speeds and ever-lower required power consumption in products and systems.

Samsung Electronics` new laboratory is capable of testing and evaluating the electromagnetic characteristics of semiconductor prototypes as well as mass produced chips. The test results are then used to design products with minimal EMI, which will mean higher finished product quality.

In addition, Samsung Electronics and the Korean Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) are jointly designing semiconductors and researching the EMI changes in new chips.

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., a US$ 19 billion flagship company of Korean-based Samsung Grtoup, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets consumer electronics, industrial electronics and semiconductors.
