SAMSUNG Electronics Develops World's Smallest CDMA Cellular Phone

Seoul, Korea, July 15, 1997 : Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has come out with the world's smallest (139cc, 124mm x 45mm x 25mm) and lightest (142g) flip-up cellular phone handset (model #: SCH-300). The new product, which is small enough for even a child to operate easily, is expected to help strengthen Samsung's competitiveness in the rapidly-changing domestic mobile telecommunications market.
It will be available in Korea starting July 21st.

The SCH-300 features a "gold connecting double antenna" that transmits the selected frequency without any resistance and "frequency channel search software" that automatically seeks and connects with the best reception available. Despite the rugged Korean terrain (70% mountains) and the highly congested Korean urban areas, these features result in some of the world's highest telephone transmission and reception rates.

In addition, a super-power-saving circuit design and high-performance lithium ion battery provide up to 360 minutes of phone conversation on digital mode or as many as 100 hours on standby.

According to Sr. Managing Dir. Sang-hyun Lee, chief of the Domestic Sales Division, "The SCH-300 is loaded with unique Samsung technology, and we expect it will play an important role in spreading the use of Korean-made mobile telecommunications products in world markets."

Samsung Electronics has focused efforts on exporting digital mobile phones, and the domestic market for these products have surged this year. As a result, Samsung sold 950,000 hand-held phones in Korea and exported an additional 150,000 units in the first half, for a total of W700 billion in sales.

Backed by CDMA technology, the mobile telecommunications business is booming for Samsung Electronics. The company expects sales of mobile telecommunications products and systems to reach W2.2 trillion in 1997, out of which W1.4 trillion will be portable handsets.

Samsung Electronics Company Ltd., a US$19 bitllion flagship company of Korean-based Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries. The company develops, manufactures, and markets consumer electronics, industrial electronics and semiconductors.
