SAMSUNG SDS Launches IBH Business

The IDC industry, which was facing industry realignment due to financial difficulties, is entering a new chapter as an expanded concept of IDC (Internet data center) business emerges to target medium to large off-line enterprises.

Samsung SDS (CEO: Hong Ki Kim) unveiled its IBH (Internet business hotel) business at its data center in Gwacheon on Mar. 7. The IBH business model incorporates various IT-related, value-added services for the IDC business, which has its base in the data center.

The IBH business utilizes its existing data centers at Gwacheon and Gumi to provide various IT-related consulting services such as ASP (application service provider) and quality certification of software and hardware in addition to conventional IDC services like co-location (equipment space rental services), server storage, and BRS (breakdown recovery system). The IBH business will provide the highest quality services and target medium to large off-line enterprises.

Samsung SDS will take a step further from the conventional data center business, which centers on BRS and will continue its IT infrastructure services as well as create new business opportunities through its accumulated years of experience. The company announced the 3 major goals for its IBH business are: ▶to continue expanding the data center operations for its clients, ▶to enter the IT infrastructure consulting business, covering the entire scope of business management, ▶and to expand its overseas operations by establishing overseas data centers.

The IBH business, which is an expanded concept of the IDC business, has 5 major business areas: ▶ Total outsourcing operations: web hosting, server hosting, data storage (backup), BRS and FM services based on co-location, which offers housing and basic management of clients' IT equipment. ▶System service provider operations: providing various services through the network such as ASP, CDS (contents delivery services), ISP (Internet service provider) and MSP. ▶IBH consulting: total IT consulting related to Internet data center construction such as IBH construction and operation, systems design, and network design. ▶System solutions operations: providing system infrastructure services to increase clients' IT competitiveness with system construction (hardware and software), network construction, wireless environment construction, multi-media environment construction and security system construction. ▶Certification services: objective inspection of the IBH infrastructure such as software certification, hardware performance certification, IDC quality certification and e-commerce authorization.
Among the 5 major business areas; ▶ total outsourcing operations and ▶ system service provider operations are conventional IDC business areas, while ▶IBH consulting; ▶system solutions operations; and ▶certification services are value-added and expanded business areas of the IBH business, which will now be provided by Samsung SDS.

Jin-Koo Kim, Senior Manager of the IBH business division at Samsung SDS, said, "Unlike conventional IDC businesses, which focus on providing small scale web hosting and co-location services to dot-com companies, the IBH business targets large off-line companies that need large capacity data centers." He added that Samsung SDS would register a trademark after completing development of the IBH business process.
Furthermore, he stressed, "Conventional IDC operators will fail if they cannot find new business models and that we will continuously create new business opportunities based on our years of experience in completing IT projects."

Further, Samsung SDS opened a data center in New York in November 2000 to expand its overseas businesses in addition to its data centers in Gwacheon/Gumi.
