SAMSUNG Electronics Develops Customized Rambus® DRAMs for Networks and Servers

SEOUL, Korea - May 3, 2001 - Samsung Electronics has developed three Rambusa modules on the market designed specifically for networks, servers and high-performance PCs.
The new products include a multi-channel Rambus DRAM for servers and high-performance PCs, a high-capacity Rambus DRAM for servers, and a Rambus DRAM for networks. These modules optimize the Rambus features for each system that they are used in.

The multi-channel Rambus DRAM module for servers and high-performance PCs has four input/output channels instead of the single channel of other Rambus devices. Data can be transmitted at 6.4 gigabytes per second (GBps), or four times faster than the 1.6GBps speed of 1-channel versions.

The high-capacity Rambus DRAM module can contain as many as 32 chip components. It is currently expandable up to 512 megabytes and will be capable of a 1-gigabyte capacity or higher in the future. This product is expected to be used in servers that require large memory.

The last Rambus DRAM module is designed for networks that require smaller memory capacities yet faster transmission speeds. It comes in 64MB and 128MB versions with small outline RIMM (SO-RIMM) packages.

Samsung Electronics is calling its three new products "customized Rambus DRAMs," because they are designed to satisfy the needs of specific systems. The company predicts that the market for these devices will reach 20 million units (based on 128MB per module units) in 2002.

Rambus DRAMs feature operating speeds of between 800MHz and 1GHz, and demand is growing rapidly for these next-generation, high-performance memory devices. Samsung Electronics cornered around 65% of the world Rambus DRAM market in the first quarter of 2001.

As many as 400 million Rambus DRAMs are forecast to be sold this year, and Samsung Electronics will supply between 150 and 200 million of these devices to capture at least
50% of the total market share.
