Old Smokey's Dirty Secret

G.W. CARVER MIDDLE SCHOOL • Florida

Project Information

G.W. Carver Middle School’s project aims to gather scientific evidence to compel public action regarding their biggest community environmental challenge to date: Old Smokey. Old Smokey is the city’s former garbage incinerator that was shut down in 1970 after a court order ruled it a public nuisance. In operation for 45 years, it stood 20 feet away from the school’s PE field. Every day, their students and the students of two adjoining elementary schools attend school and play outside just in front of the Old Smokey site. Students will analyze the findings of the city’s soil tests and interview researchers, residents, and local officials. After collecting their own data, students will compare their test results to the official ones and bring attention to the matter, inspiring city officials to take action.
