Lighting Up A Community

H.D. WOODSON STEM • Washington, DC

Project Information

H.D. Woodson STEM High School’s project looks to apply STEM to improve the safety of their Northeast Washington, DC community. Adjacent to to the school is a park currently unsafe for students to travel to and from school as many students often arrive and leave in darkness. While school staff encourages students to access main roads and lighted streets, most of the bus routes and neighborhoods align the perimeter of the park. In concert with local agencies such as DCPS police department and parks and recreation, their students will collect and analyze data to determine where to place solar panel lights through the park and travel routes adjacent to their school.
