Taking Care of Crabiness

Project Information

Frank H. Harrison Middle School’s project focuses on understanding the environmental impact of an invasive species, the European Green Crab, on their local ecosystem. The clamming industry is an 11 million dollar/year industry for the State of Maine, and the crabs have started to feed on the juvenile clams, as well as to destroy the marsh grass in local tidal marshes. The students will communicate with the Maine Clam Association, local lobstermen, Town Managers, and University Professors to gain knowledge of the problem. This will teach students interview skills and research skills. Then the students will collect, organize, and analyze data in order to come to their own conclusions about the magnitude of the problem and what needs to be done to respond. Finally, students will develop recommendations for the control and management of the European Green Crab problem to share with the community.
