How Do I Transfer MP3 Files To My SGH-A837 (Rugby) Phone?

The SGH-A837 (Rugby) phone features several different methods to transfer MP3 files both to and from the phone. Each are explained, in depth, further down the page.

The phone provides the ability to playback MP3 files, assign them as a contact ringtone, alarm tone or as the incoming call ringtone. The music player supports audio files with extensions MP3, MP4/AAC, M4A, 3GP/AAC, 3GP/AMR, WAV, WMA, REAL or MIDI.

Please Note: The Media Player does not necessarily support all features of a particular file format nor all the variations of those formats. The Media Player includes support for Digital Rights Management (DRM) which allows you to play some purchased or subscription content. These copyright protections may prevent some images, music (including ringtones) and other content from being copied, modified, transferred or forwarded.


Format

    To transfer MP3 files, from a PC via a memory card, requires that you have a Memory Card, Memory Card Adaptor & Memory Card Reader. The memory card must first be formatted, by the phone, in order for the phone to create the playable download folders (Audio & Music).

    Warning: Formatting a microSD memory card will permanently erase all data

    Note: The minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 8GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    Caution: The plug-in microSD memory card and its contents can be easily damaged by scratches or bending.  Use caution when inserting or removing the card and keep all memory cards out of reach of children.

    To format a microSD memory card follow the steps below:

    1. Insert a microSD memory card into the memory card slot, located under the phone battery
      • Click here for instructions on inserting or removing a memory card
    2. From the standby screen, press the right soft key for Menu
    3. Select My Stuff (7)
    4. Highlight the On Card tab, using the left or right navigation keys
    5. Highlight Audio, Graphics or Videos, using the navigation keys
    6. Press the left soft key for Options
    7. Select More (4)
    8. Select Memory Card Settings (2)
    9. Select Format (2)
    10. Press the left soft key for Yes to confirm formatting the microSD Memory Card

To transfer (Via a memory card) MP3 files, from a PC, to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    Caution: The plug-in microSD memory card and its contents can be easily damaged by scratches or bending.  Use caution when inserting or removing the card and keep all memory cards out of reach of children.

    Please Note: The minimum size limit for the microSD memory card is 32MB. This phone does support the use of a microSDHC 8GB capacity memory card.  However, for optimal performance Samsung recommends using a card no larger than 2GB.

    On the PC

    1. Insert the microSD memory card into the memory card adaptor
    2. Insert the memory card adaptor into the memory card reader
    3. Connect the memory card reader to the PC’s USB port
    4. Copy desired MP3 files from the PC hard drive
    5. Paste the MP3 files into the microSD memory card's Music or Tones folder
    6. Remove the microSD memory card from the memory card adaptor

    On the Samsung phone

    1. While in standby mode, insert the microSD memory card into the memory card slot, located under the battery
    2. Press the right soft key for Menu
    3. Select My Stuff (7)
    4. Highlight the On Card tab, using the left or right navigation keys
    5. Highlight the Audio folder, using the navigation keys, then press the  key
    6. Highlight the Music or Tones folder, using the navigation keys, then press the  key
    7. Highlight the MP3 file, using the navigation keys
    8. Press the left soft key for Options
    9. Select either Move (6) or Copy (7)
    10. Select either Selected (1) or Multiple (2)
      • If Multiple, highlight each MP3 file, press the  key to check the boxes, then press the left soft key to Move or Copy the files
    11. Highlight Phone, using the navigation keys, then press the  key
    12. Highlight the Audio folder, using the navigation keys, then press the  key
    13. Highlight either the Tones or Music folder, using the navigation keys, then press the  key
    14. Press the left soft key for Options
    15. Select to Paste Here (1) to Move or Copy the MP3 file to the phone

    Note: Audio files less than 300 KB are treated as ringtones, whereas audio files which are greater than 300 KB are stored in the Music Folder. You can not set an MP3 file as a ringtone if it is larger than 300 KB.

To transfer MP3 files, Via Bluetooth, from another phone to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    On the Samsung phone

    1. Turn Bluetooth On (For instructions click here)
    2. Set the phone’s Bluetooth visibility to On (For instructions click here)

    On the phone with MP3 files

    1. While in standby mode, activate Bluetooth by turning it On
    2. Search for new Bluetooth devices
    3. Highlight the phone name (SGH-A837 (Rugby)), using the navigation keys
    4. Exchange the PIN Codes on both devices to pair the phones (the default code is “0000”)
    5. Browse for desired MP3 file(s)
    6. Transfer data from phone to phone
    7. Accept exchanging data

    Note: For information or assistance related to configuration, specifications and instructions of the Non-Samsung device please contact the manufacturer of said device.

    Note: Audio files less than 300 KB are treated as ringtones, whereas audio files which are greater than 300 KB are stored in the Music Folder. You cannot set an MP3 file as a ringtone if it is larger than 300 KB.

To transfer MP3 files From a PC, via a Bluetooth adaptor, to the Samsung phone follow the steps below:

    On the Samsung phone

    1. While in standby mode, turn Bluetooth On  (For instructions click here)
    2. Change the phone’s Bluetooth visibility to On  (For instructions click here)

    On the PC

    1. Connect the Bluetooth adaptor to the PC’s USB port
    2. Search for Bluetooth devices
    3. Select the device to pair with the PC
    4. Exchange PIN code(s) on both the PC & phone to pair devices (default pass code is “0000”)
    5. Using Windows explorer, locate desired MP3 file
    6. Right click on the MP3 file
    7. Select send to Bluetooth then select the phone

    On the Samsung phone

    1. Accept incoming data from the PC

PC Studio 3

    Note: If the Bluetooth feature is currently active on the phone, USB communication will not be available. To transfer files to your phone, turn off the Bluetooth functionality or click here for instructions.

    WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    To transfer MP3 files using PC Studio, from a PC to the phone, follow the steps below:

    1. These instructions assume you currently have Samsung PC Studio 3.  If you do not, please check the Samsung Accessories site to purchase the software.
    2. If the application is not yet installed, insert the CD into the drive on your PC and follow the on screen instructions to install PC Studio 3
      NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT USB CABLE DURING PC STUDIO 3 INSTALLATION
    3. Launch PC Studio 3, you will see "Not Connected" in the bottom right corner
    4. Plug the USB cable into both the phone & the PC, if the Select USB Mode box, pops up on the phone display select PC Studio
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top right of the display
    5. PC Studio 3 will now display "SGH-A837 (Rugby) Connected" in the bottom right corner
    6. Click on Phone Explorer (Manage Files), you will now see the PC Studio Phone Explorer appear
    7. From the PC box, navigate to the location of the file(s) to transfer then highlight the desired MP3 file(s)
    8. Click on To Phone, on the Phone Explorer menu bar
    9. From the PC to Phone box, click on either the Music folder or the Audio folder (Both support the MP3 file format)
    10. Click OK to copy the selected file to the phone's memory
    11. Another PC to Phone box will appear while the MP3 file(s) is being transferred

    WARNING: DO NOT DISCONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    Hints & Tips:

    • Make sure the USB cable is compatible with your phone model. You can always check for the correct data cable by looking at the model number on http://www.samsungwireless.com in your phone's accessories section.
    • Remember to select file formats and file sizes supported by the phone when uploading files to the phone from the PC.

Mass Storage

    The phone's mass storage feature allows the transfer of MP3 files directly from a PC to the microSD memory card, located in the phone. In order to use this option, the microSD memory card must be formatted by the phone to create the necessary folders. For instructions on how to format a microSD memory card, click here.

    Caution: The plug-in microSD memory card and its contents can be easily damaged by scratches or bending.  Use caution when inserting or removing the card and keep all memory cards out of reach of children.

    To transfer MP3 files, using the Mass Storage option, follow the steps below:

    1. Navigate to the location of the MP3 file(s) then copy to the Windows clipboard
    2. Plug the USB cable into both the phone & the PC
    3. If the Select USB Mode box appears on the phone display, select Mass Storage
      • If the Select USB Mode box doesn't appear, change the USB setting to Mass Storage or Always Ask (For instructions click here)
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top right of the display
    4. A new Removable Disk box will appear on the PC's monitor, prompting "What do you want Windows to do?"
    5. Double click on "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer"
    6. Paste the MP3 file(s) into the phone's Music or Tones folders, located within the Audio folder

    WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

Windows Media™ Player

    The Windows Media™ Player Sync Music option allows the transfer of music files directly from a PC to the microSD memory card, located in the phone. Before connecting the phone & PC, the microSD memory card must be formatted by the phone to create the necessary folders. For instructions on how to format a microSD memory card, click here.

    Caution: The plug-in microSD memory card and its contents can be easily damaged by scratches or bending.  Use caution when inserting or removing the card and keep all memory cards out of reach of children.

    In order to use the Sync Music option, the PC must be loaded with Windows Media Player 10 or higher. To download Windows Media Player 10 or higher visit the following website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ . Note: If the Bluetooth feature is currently active on the phone, USB communication will not be available. To transfer files to your phone, turn off the Bluetooth functionality or click here for instructions.

    WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    To transfer MP3 files, using the Windows Media Player Sync Music option, follow the steps below:

    1. Open Windows Media Player 10 or higher
    2. Plug the USB cable into both the phone & the PC
    3. If the Select USB Mode box appears on the phone display, select Mass Storage
      • If the Select USB Mode box doesn't appear, change the USB setting to Media Player or Always Ask (For instructions click here)
      • When successfully connected, the phone will show the connected icon  on the top right of the display
    4. Once the USB connection establishes, the phone displays "Connected" and the computer screen displays the A837 device
    5. From the Windows Media Player application Sync tab, ensure that the SGH-A837 (Rugby) device displays in the upper-right corner of the screen. If not, click on Next device until the SGH-A837 (Rugby) appears.
    6. Click on the Library plus sign (+) then click on Songs to display a list
    7. Add or Drag the MP3 file(s) from the library to the playlist or Sync List
    8. Select Start Sync to transfer the MP3 file(s) to the phone memory

    WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT USB CABLE DURING THE MP3 FILE TRANSFER

    MP3 files can also be Downloaded through Shop Tones, a service offered through the AT&T network. Shop Tones is a paid subscription service offered through AT&T. Please contact AT&T for subscription information such a pricing and availability in your area as well as information on how to download the ringtones.
