Using the best kind of detergent in your washing machine may seem tricky. You definitely want your clothing and other items to come out as clean as possible, but you don’t want to accidentally overfill your machine with detergent or place it in the wrong compartment. If you’re wondering how much detergent you should be using, what type to use, and how to fill your particular machine, we have some helpful answers and tips right here.

Use the right kind of detergent

Caution: Do not use regular detergent, organic detergent, natural detergent, or HE detergents containing natural ingredients, such as vinegar or baking soda. Using these can cause damage to the washing machine.

Selecting the right detergent is crucial for both the cleanliness of your laundry and the longevity of your washing machine. For HE (High Efficiency) machines, including Samsung models, it's essential to use HE detergents to prevent damage and maintain efficiency. While the choice between liquid and powder detergents depends on personal preference, remember that liquid detergent doubles as a pre-treatment for stains, though it's easy to overuse. Powder detergent may require more effort to dissolve in cold water.

Determining the right amount

Important: Going over the MAX line in your washing machine’s detergent drawer will stain or damage your clothes or washer. Try using the least amount of detergent necessary to clean your clothes.

To avoid damage or staining of clothes and your washer, never exceed the MAX line in the detergent drawer. The correct detergent amount varies depending on load size and detergent concentration. HE detergents are highly concentrated, necessitating less product per load. Always consult the detergent's packaging for dosing instructions, and consider using the cap for precise measurement. For those seeking convenience, select washing machines feature auto-dispensers.

Adding detergent to your washing machine

Each washing machine type—Flex Wash, Top Load, or Front Load—has specific instructions for detergent addition:

Flex Wash

Utilize two separate compartments for dual loads. Avoid using detergent pods in the top washer.

Top Load

Add detergent directly under the lid into the designated drawer.

Front Load

Place detergent in the front-access drawer.

If using detergent pods, place them directly in the drum. Do not use them in the top washer of the Flex Wash model.

Add detergent pods to your washing machine

Detergent pods can be used if you prefer. However, make sure you are using HE (High Efficiency) pods. Just toss them in the tub or drum instead of using the detergent drawer.

Note: Do not use detergent pods in the the top washer on the Flex Wash model, since it is too small for detergent pods to work correctly.

Enhancing cleaning effectiveness

For the cleanest clothes, follow these best practices:

  • Sort Laundry: Organize items into whites, colors, and bedding.

  • Pre-treat Stains: Use liquid detergent on stains before washing.

  • Proper Loading: Do not overload the washer and adjust detergent based on load size.
