How do I Manage my Contacts using Kies 2.6?

Click Contacts below your device's name in the left panel to manage the contacts available on your device. You may need to select a tab at the top of the contacts list to display your contacts. There is a tab for contacts stored on your mobile device, contacts stored in an online account, or contacts stored on your SIM card (if applicable).

    Kies 2.6 is only available for use on a Windows platform. Kies 3 is availble for both PC and Mac. Mac users should download Kies 3 for Mac.   • Add New Contacts

    Click  at the top of the contacts list. A new contact panel displays to the right. Enter the contact information and click  .

    The new contact is shown in the list of contacts displayed in Kies, but the change will not save to the device until you click Save to device.

    You can add the following information to a new contact:

    • Contact photo: Click  to add a photo to the contact.
    • Name/Last name: Enter the contact's first and last name. Click View more to display all available name fields:
      • Middle name
      • Prefix
      • Suffix
      • First name (phonetic): Enter the phonetic spelling of the contact's first name.
      • Middle name (phonetic): Enter the phonetic spelling of the contact's middle name.
      • Last name (phonetic): Enter the phonetic spelling of the contact's last name.
    • Phone number: Enter a phone number for the contact. Click the drop-down box to select the phone number type. Click  for additional phone number fields.
    • Group: Click the drop-down box to select a group for this contact. Click  to create a new group on the device.
    • Email: Enter an email address for the contact. Click the drop-down box to select the email address type. Click  for additional email addresses.
    • Messenger: Enter instant messenger details for the contact. Click the drop-down box to select the instant messenger account type. Click  for additional messenger accounts.
    • Address: Click the drop-down box to select the address type. Click  for additional addresses.
    • Website: Add a website address for the contact. Click  for additional website addresses.
    • Birthday: Enter the contact's birthday.
    • Anniversary: Enter an anniversary date for the contact. Click  for additional anniversaries.
    • Event: Add an event date for the contact. Click the drop-down box to assign a type to the event. Click  for additional events.
    • Relationship: Add information about a person related to the contact. Click the drop-down box to select the relationship and enter the person's name in the Relationship box.
    • Personal information: Add the contact's nickname.
    • Organization: Add the contact's job details, including Work and Job title.
    • Memo/Notes: Enter a free text memo or note for the contact.
  • Delete Contacts

    Mark the checkbox next to the contact you want to delete, then click  . The contact will be deleted from the list of contacts displayed in Kies, but the change has not been saved to the device until you click Save to device.

  • Edit Contacts

    Double-click a contact to open the edit panel on the right. If the panel is already open, you can click a contact and then click  .

    When a contact has multiple entries for an information field, click  to delete a field. Make the desired changes to the contact, and click  to save the changes. Make sure you click Save to device after you save the changes to commit the changes to the device as well.

  • Import Contacts

    This option is available only on the Kies for Windows® version. If you do not see the device's name in the left panel, you may be running Kies in Lite mode. Click View > Switch Mode > Normal Mode, or click the mode shortcut in the top-right corner of the window to return Kies to "normal" mode.

    You can import contacts database files to your device from your computer. You can import contacts databases in the following formats: .CSV, .LEF, .NPF, .SPB, and .VCF. Contacts database files may contain contacts folders related to an account you synchronized on the device they were exported from. If you choose to import these contacts, they will be saved to the device's local storage and not to any of the device's synchronized accounts.

    1. Connect the device to your computer.

    2. Open Kies.

    3. Click Contacts below your device's name in the left panel.

      Note: Only contacts stored on the device will display.



    4. Click Import from PC.



    5. Select a contact or database, and click Open.

      Note: Click Preview to view the contacts in the selected file.



    6. Some contacts database files may contain multiple contacts folders. If you see a screen similar to the one below, select the folders you want to import into the device, and click OK. Any contacts imported will be saved to the device's local storage and will not be synced with any online accounts you have set up on the device.

      Note: If importing CSV files, align CSV file fields with Kies fields before importing.



    7. The contacts are displayed in the device's contacts library, but they are not yet saved to the device. You can edit the contacts and remove any unnecessary contacts from the list. When you are satisfied, click Save to device.

  • Sync Contacts with Your Computer

    Only contacts saved locally on your device will be synchronized with your computer. Contacts synchronized to your device from your Google™ Account or other online services will not be synchronized with your computer.

    You can sync the contacts between your computer and your device. You can sync contacts to Microsoft® Outlook® or the Windows Address Book on computers running Windows.

    1. Connect the cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.

    2. Connect the cable to your Samsung device.

    3. Click the Sync tab.



    4. Mark the checkbox next to Sync contacts with, and click the drop-down box to select the application you want to sync contacts to, such as Outlook or Windows Contacts.

      Note: When using a Mac, the option displayed is Sync with Address book, and there will not be a drop-down box.



    When selecting Outlook, there are additional settings you will need to define.

    • Select All contacts to sync all of the contacts in Outlook with your device.

    • Select Selected Contacts folder to sync only the contacts available in a specific contacts folder in Outlook.

    • Select the Syncing Direction by clicking the drop-down box. When syncing in both directions, or from the device to Outlook only, you can define the Outlook contacts folder where you want to save contacts stored on your device.

    • Mark the checkbox next to Sync the Outlook category with the contact group of the device to set the sync function to map the Outlook category field to the group assigned to a contact.



    Syncing

    After you have set the sync preferences, you can sync your contacts by clicking  in the top-right corner of the Sync tab. You can set your device to sync automatically each time it is connected to Kies.

    To turn on automatic sync, click the Basic information tab, and mark the checkbox next to Sync automatically when device is connected.

    Note: Automatic sync options only apply to Kies 2.6 for Windows.

  • Sync Contacts with Online Accounts

    This process will only sync your online account contacts to the device and display them in your device's contacts. It will not sync your device's contacts to your online account.

    You can sync the contacts between your device and your Google™, Yahoo!®, or Windows account.

    1. Connect the device to your computer.

    2. Open Kies.

    3. Click the Sync tab.



    4. Mark the checkbox next to Sync contacts with, click the drop-down box, and select Google, Yahoo!, or Windows Contacts.



    5. Enter the username and password for the account, and click OK.



    Syncing

    After you have set the sync preferences, you can sync your contacts by clicking  in the top-right corner of the Sync tab. You can set your device to sync automatically each time it is connected to Kies. To turn on automatic sync, click the Basic information tab, and mark the checkbox next to Sync automatically when device is connected.

  • Viewing Contacts

    The contacts library is not available in Kies for Mac®. If you do not see the device's name in the left panel, you may be running Kies in Lite mode. Click View > Switch Mode > Normal Mode, or click the mode shortcut in the top-right corner of the window to return Kies to "normal" mode.

    Click  to switch to group view. In group view, an additional panel displays to the left of your contacts list. This panel shows each group available for your contacts. Click a group name to display only the contacts that are members of that group. The same list-view sort functions are available in group view. Click any column header to sort the displayed contacts based on the type of information stored in the column.

    Duplicate Contacts View

    Click  to display a list of possible duplicate contacts. Click the Duplicated contacts column header to reverse the sort order. You can mark duplicate contacts and then click Merge duplicated contacts to combine the contacts into one entry.

    Note: This is not the same as joining two contacts on your Samsung device. This feature will merge the two entries into one.

  • Sorting Contacts

    The contacts library is not available in Kies for Mac. Also, if you do not see the device's name or Library in the left panel, you may be running Kies in Lite mode. Click View > Switch Mode > Normal Mode, or click the mode shortcut in the top-right corner of the window to return Kies to "normal" mode. When you view contacts stored on a SIM card, not all options and features are available, and the fields available may vary based on the SIM card.

    You can sort contacts in Kies 2.6 in list view, group view, thumbnail view, and duplicate view. Each view has its own sorting function. Click Contacts below your device name or Library in the left panel. If you are viewing contacts in your Kies 2.6 library, you will need to double-click the contacts file you want to view. You may need to select a tab at the top of the contacts list to display your contacts when viewing both contacts stored on your device and contacts in your Kies 2.6 library. When viewing contacts stored on your device, related to an account, or stored on your SIM card, the contacts are displayed in their own tab.

    Sort in List View

    Click to switch to list view. Click a column header to sort the contacts using the information stored in the column. For example, click Name to sort your contacts by contact name. Click Name again to reverse the sort order.

    You can add columns to the view by right-clicking on any column header. Displayed columns are marked with a check mark. Click any column name to add or remove it from the view. The columns available for sorting contacts are:

    • Display name
    • Name
    • Middle name
    • Last name
    • Phone number
    • Phone number 2
    • Phone number 3
    • Group
    • Email
    • Favorites
    • Website
    • Birthday

    Note: Additional columns may be available in some cases. Availability will vary based on details added to the contacts in your list and where the contacts came from.

    Sort in Group View

    Click Group View Button to switch to group view. In group view, an additional panel displays to the left of your contacts list. This panel shows each group available for your contacts. Click a group name to display only the contacts that are members of that group. The same list-view sort functions are available in group view. Click any column header to sort the displayed contacts based on the type of information stored in the column.

    Sort in Thumbnail View

    Click to switch to thumbnail view. When viewing contacts using the thumbnail view, you can sort contacts by Display name and Phone number. Click Display name or Phone number above the contacts list. Click either option a second time to reverse the sort order.

    Duplicate Contacts View

    Click to display a list of possible duplicate contacts. Click the Duplicated contacts column header to reverse the sort order.

  • Saving Contacts to Your Computer

    Contacts synchronized to your device from social networking sites can be saved to your computer using the contacts' "save to PC" option. They will not be included in the Back up/Restore feature.

    You can save the contacts on your device to your computer.

    From the Device's Contacts Library

    Note: This option is available only on the Kies for Windows version. If you do not see the device's name in the left panel, you may be running Kies in Lite mode. Click View > Switch Mode > Normal Mode, or click the mode shortcut in the top-right corner of the window to return Kies to "normal" mode.

    To save contacts on your device to your computer:

    1. Connect the cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.

    2. Connect the cable to your Samsung device.

    3. Open Kies.

    4. Click Contacts below your device's name in the left panel.



    5. Click the tab at the top of the contacts list that contains the contacts you want to save. In the example below, the contacts are stored in the Google™ Account samdavidsn@gmail.com.



    6. Mark each contact you want stored on your computer. If you do not mark any contacts, all of the contacts stored on your mobile device and any available account contacts will be saved to your computer. SIM contacts (if applicable) will not be saved in the contacts file unless they are marked with a check mark. Click Save to PC.



    7. Select the location you want to save the contacts file to, change the filename (if necessary), and click Save.



      Note: Kies can add password protection to the contacts file that is created. If you want to add a password to the file, click Set password, and enter the desired password before clicking Save. You may also want to note the location in your PC where you saved your contact information.
  • Using the Back Up/Restore Feature

    Backup options may vary depending on your device.

    You can use the Back up/Restore feature on your Windows computer to save your device's contacts. This feature lets you create backups of the content on your device, letting you restore data quickly and easily.

    1. Connect the cable to a compatible USB port on your computer.

    2. Connect the cable to your Samsung device.

    3. Open Kies.

    4. Click the Back up/Restore tab.



    5. If necessary, click Data backup.



    6. Mark Contacts and click the Backup button.



    7. Click Complete when the backup is finished. The contacts file will be saved to the default Kies folder you have set in a folder named \users\"username"\Documents\Samsung\Kies\Backup\"Model number."

      Note: This path may have changed during installation if you manually chose a unique folder path.
