Samsung commits to the promotion of education in Newcastle

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, November 12, 2014 – Samsung Electronics South Africa will hand over an E-Learning Centre, Smart School solution to Phendukani Full Service High School, in Newcastle, on the 12th November 2014. The ceremony will be attended by KwaZulu Natal MEC of Education, Ms N.P. Nkonyeni and KwaZulu Natal Head of Department, Dr N Sishi.

The Smart School will enable learners and teachers to benefit from a broad range of academic related information on their mobile devices. This includes up-to-date school content, access to crucial learning tools and real-time attendance and participation trackers, all of which serve to increase students’ engagement and performance in the classroom. The communication channel between the school and students is strengthened, helping to create a more interactive learning environment.

“Through its ‘vision 2020’, Samsung has committed to improving educational outcomes and changing the lives of millions of Africans, under the ‘Hope for Children’ banner,” says Pitso Kekana, Head of Corporate Citizenship at Samsung Electronics SA. “Samsung aims to ensure that young people in South Africa enjoy better education, by creating new learning possibilities through their education solutions.

“We can no longer ignore the societal challenges faced by educators and learners, which can be improved through access to quality education that fits into the 21st century. We are excited to be able to provide Phendukani High School with a smart education environment that utilises the most advanced IT Infrastructure, to help develop creative minds.”

Mr BM Kubheka, Headmaster at Phendukani Full Service High School, says “The school tries to nurture learners to achieve academic excellence, provides affordable quality education and empowers the youth with skills that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to society. Through collaborations with other institutions and organisations with a shared vision, we will be able to thrive and make a difference in the lives of our students.”

“Education sits at the top of our organisational priorities, which combined with our innovative technology, puts us in a unique position to help communities discover new possibilities and create positive change,” concludes Kekana.
