23 January 2012 - Samsung South Africa would like to warn the public to be aware of a scam that is falsely using the Samsung brand to “trick” consumers into paying a “release fee” for a supposed prize amount of R250 000, to be released to the consumer.

“Samsung South Africa is not running any competition in the market at this stage that pertains to prize money,” says Deon Liebenberg, Managing Director at Samsung South Africa. “Therefore, any person that receives an SMS or email to this effect is to please report this immediately to the Sandton Police Station on 011 722 4200 using case number CAS 163 / 8 / 2010 or alternatively to Samsung’s call centre on 0860 726 786.”

Samsung have recently been made aware of the false material circulating in the market that carries the Samsung branding. “The communication states the following message; Congratulations!! Your cell phone number has won R250 000 in our SAMSUNG T- MOBILE promotion, your ref no: ZA27,” says Liebenberg. “It also states that for consumers to claim their prize they must phone Mr George ASAP as well as pay a release fee, with the intent of extracting funds from the person’s account and is accompanied by a (false) validation certificate.”

This prize money hoax communication is absolutely false and is in no way endorsed or undertaken by Samsung South Africa. “In fact, when consumers read the information they will notice inconsistencies in branding, staff names used and of course, unprofessional communication templates.”

“Samsung South Africa has raised this matter with the SAPS to open an investigation into the matter and would like to reassure our customers that we take these hoaxes very seriously and will endeavour to protect the South African consumer as best as possible in this regard.”

Consumers should be advised that all competitions and promotions undertaken by Samsung South Africa will always be displayed on the company’s web site (

“We urge consumers to verify uncertain competition details through this channel or alternatively, to contact the Samsung South Africa call centre (0860 726 786) to verify the details of any competition, to ensure that you do not divulge any personal information or pay undue fees, as a result of these types of scams,” says Liebenberg.
