GSM Data Communications
GSM was the first mobile standard to allow for data and fax communication.Due to limitations in technology and available bandwidth,the speed of transmission was limited to 9600 bits per second per timeslot allocated to the subscriber.
Making a data connection over GSM is similar to making a data connection via a landline.
1. A number is dialled and after about 20 to 30 seconds a circuit is established through the network to the destination.
2. While the circuit is open,the subscriber is charged for the duration of the call by the operator.This is reffered to as a "circuit -switched" call.
There are many weaknesses to this approach to data communications:
1. Subscriber have to wait up to 30 seconds to get connected to the Internet
2. Subscriber are billed for "dead" time when they are not necessarily transferring any data but the connection is still open.
3. While the subscriber is connected to the Internet, but not necessarily sending or receiving data,that channel is not available
to any other subscriber,effectively wasting the resource.
