How to use the Note 9 S Pen

The new S Pen is equipped with Bluetooth, so you can use it as a remote control. It’s perfect for selfies, presentations, and more. Also, the battery charges quickly when you insert your S Pen into your phone, so there’s no rush. Just click the S Pen button, and launch a new experience.

How to use the remote control to take photos:Click to Expand
Remote controlled Selfie

The Galaxy Note9’s new S Pen can be used as a remote control. Just click the S Pen button to launch the camera, choose the right camera mode, and snap a remote selfie. Capture more natural poses, intuitively and conveniently.

Use the S Pen as a remote control:

  • Press and Hold: Launch camera
  • Single press: Take a picture
  • Double press: Change between front & rear cameras

S Pen Remote

When you set up your S Pen as a remote control, you can customize its functions. For example, if you want to launch your favorite app in an instant, you can opt to press and hold the S Pen button. You can also decide which app functions to control with a single or double press.

To set up:

Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > S Pen remote. 

S Pen Presentation

With Samsung DeX and the S Pen, you can deliver amazing, business presentations. Use the S Pen as a remote control and advance the slides without taking your eyes off the audience. An updated Samsung DeX means an HDMI adapter and the Galaxy Note9 are all you need.

Use the S Pen as a remote control:

  • Single press: Next Slide
  • Double press: Previous Slide

Insert S Pen
1 Ensure that the S Pen is inserted securely into the Note9.
2 Tap on Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > S Pen remote > toggle On or Off. Alternatively, open your Notification Panel and tap on S Pen remote.

A screen lock must be applied in order to use this feature.

This feature only works if you are using the S Pen (connected) and the device then locks. 

1 To enable this feature, tap on Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Unlock with S Pen remote > Unlock with S Pen remote.
2 You will then be asked to confirm your Screen Lock, then tap on OK.

Simply insert your S Pen for 40 seconds to charge it to full. A full charge will last about 30 minutes of standy time of 200 clicks of the S Pen button.

There are several additions to Live Message from the Note8 to the Note9:

  • My Emoji Stickers as the background
  • New brushes - Hearts, Snowflakes and Rainbow
  • Colour Picker - choose any colour that you want for your brush (Rainbow brush will give you a choice of 7 gradients)

To disable S Pen signature color for Screen Off Memo, tap on Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > Screen off memo > Use S Pen signature colour. 

How to replace the S Pen nib:Click to Expand
Replace the S Pen nib
1 Firmly hold the nib with the tweezers and pull to remove it
2 Insert a new nib into the S Pen

Be careful not to pinch your fingers with the tweezers.

  • Do not reuse old nibs. Doing so may cause the S Pen to malfunction.
  • Do not press the nib excessively when inserting the nib into the S Pen.
  • Do not insert the round end of the nib into the S Pen. Doing so may cause damage to the S Pen or your device.
  • Do not bend or apply excessive pressure with the S Pen while using it. The S Pen may be damaged or the nib may be deformed.
  • Do not hard press on the screen with the S Pen. The pen nib may be deformed.
  • If you use the S Pen at sharp angles on the screen, the device may not recognize the S Pen actions.
  • If water enters the S Pen slot, gently shake the device to remove the water from the slot before using it.
