Why does my new Note9 seem to be draining battery very quickly?

The Galaxy Note9 provides various ways to increase battery life but you may feel as though battery life seems be a bit short during the initial period (about 3 days) after the purchase (opening). This is because the App power monitor feature and Optimization of battery usage feature is not working properly as yet as it has no battery usage data to use.

Depending on your battery usage pattern, if you optimize the battery usage time by activating App power monitor feature and Optimization of battery usage feature, you can see an improvement of the battery life of the device from about 7 days after opening of device.

Usage time may vary depending on your device settings, usage pattern and operating conditions. To increase battery usage time, please follow the below tips:

Device OptimisationClick to Expand
Device Optimisation

Launch the Settings app > tap on Device Maintenance > OPTIMISE NOW.

The quick optimisation feature improves device performance through:

  • Clearing some memory
  • Deleting unnecessary files and closing apps running in the background
  • Managing abnormal battery usage
  • Scanning for crashed apps and malware.
Prevent apps from running in the backgroundClick to Expand
Prevent apps from running in the background

Launch the Settings app > tap on Device Maintenance > Battery > select apps > SAVE POWER.

This will save battery power by preventing apps that are running in the background from using battery power when they are not being used.

Monitor Battery UsageClick to Expand
Battery Usage

Launch the Settings app > tap on Device Maintenance > Battery > BATTERY USAGE.

From here you can monitor which apps are draining your battery the most. Some apps can be draining your device even though they were not being used so use Battery Usage to check whether you want to keep that app or not.

Disable Auto Sync DataClick to Expand
Disable Auto Sync Data

Launch the Settings app > tap on Clouds and accounts Accounts > disable Auto sync data.

This will stop applications and account from syncing in the background which will save you battery life. However, this will stop notifications from coming through from these apps as they are not getting data from the server. You will have to manually check each application, and that's when it will start pulling data.

Mid Power Saving ModeClick to Expand
Mid Power Saver

Launch the Settings app > tap on Device Maintenance > Battery > MID.

This will let you customise the following:

  • Background network usage: Allow apps running in the background to use Wi-Fi and mobile data. If this is turned off, apps running in the background may not receive updates or send you notifications.
  • Always On Display: Show information on the standby screen.
  • Speed limiter: Limit the maximum CPU speed to 70%.
  • Decrease brightness: decrease brightness by 10%, 5% or none. It'll also tell you approximately how much battery life it will add depending on your usage patterns.
  • Screen resolution: switch between HD+ (1480x720) / FHD+ (2220x1080) / WQHD+ (2960x1440)
Max Power Saving ModeClick to Expand
Max Power Saver

Launch the Settings app > tap on Device Maintenance > Battery > MAX.

Maximum Power Saving Mode turns off everything except for a set of selected applications (default is Phone, Messages, Chrome, Settings). This will also let you customise the following:

  • Background network usage: Allow apps running in the background to use Wi-Fi and mobile data. If this is turned off, apps running in the background may not receive updates or send you notifications.
  • Always On Display: Show information on the standby screen.
  • Speed limiter: Limit the maximum CPU speed to 60%.

To exit Maximum Power Saving Mode, tap on More Options (the three dots) > Turn off Maximum power saving mode.
