Working Together to Expand Renewable Energy and Address Climate Change

Samsung Electronics is dedicated to relentlessly addressing the issue of climate change. By forging p alliances and collaborations with diverse stakeholders, our efforts span across a wide range of domestic and global initiatives, business partnerships, and impactful external communication endeavors.

Initiatives

RE100 Initiative

Committed to transitioning to renewable energy, we joined RE100, a global initiative that drives renewable energy transition. We are continuously expanding renewable energy through diverse procurement strategies. In particular, Samsung Electronics is expanding the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) for global businesses by developing competitive renewable energy projects and engaging in activities such as collaborating with stakeholders to streamline PPA policies. As a member of the RE100 Advisory Committee, Samsung Electronics will play a pivotal role in driving engaging discussions in line with the initiative’s strategy and policy recommendations over the next two years (March 2024–February 2026).

ACEC (Asia Clean Energy Coalition)

As a founding member, Samsung Electronics actively participates alongside other global companies in the Steering Committee, Strategy Advisory Group, and Country Working Groups of the ACEC, jointly established in 2022 by the Climate Group, the Global Wind Energy Council, and the World Resources Institute to accelerate the shift to renewable energy and decarbonize power grids in Asia.
In particular, we continue to make efforts to create a favorable renewable energy environment in our primary production bases, South Korea and Vietnam. We collaborate with ACEC members through initiatives such as attending corporate meetings to increase transparency in South Korea's Green Premium Program and proposing policy enhancements. In Vietnam, a decree for the DPPA was issued in July 2024 as a result of collective engagement with the Vietnamese government to introduce a renewable energy PPA mechanism. We are continuously communicating with stakeholders to improve the mechanism. Key ACEC outreach activities include:

CoREi (Corporate Renewable Energy Initiative)

Samsung Electronics is a memeber of CoREi, an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable growth for companies and expanding corporate renewable energy in South Korea. Key outreach activities of CoREi include:

  • July 2024 - Hosted the "Renewable Energy 24/7 (real-time matching) Procurement Concept and Status" seminar

  • November 2023 - Hosted the "Proposal for Businesses to Transition to Renewable Energy” session at the 2023 Korean Leaders Summit, hosted by the UNGC (United Nations Global Compact) Korea

  • March 2023 - Published the “2030 Domestic Renewable Energy Demand Outlook Report”

  • November 2022 - Hosted the “Environmental Working Group Renewable Energy Procurement” session

  • October 2022 - Published the “Corporate Renewable Energy Procurement Guidelines”

Carbon-Free Alliance

Samsung Electronics is a member of the Carbon-Free Alliance, serving on its Board of Directors and engaging in various working groups. The impact areas of this public-private partnership include developing international standards and certification systems for Carbon-Free Energy (CFE), including renewable energy, hydrogen, CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage), and nuclear energy, while expanding the adoption of CFE to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within the industrial sector. The Carbon-Free Alliance primarily focuses on the following impact areas:

  • Developing international CFE standards and certification systems
  • Strengthening international coordination to facilitate global CFE implementation and collaboration with developing countries
  • December 2024 - The Carbon-Free Alliance international conference

    • Reviewed the technical and institutional requirements for expanding Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) supply and advocated for the necessity of a CFE certification system
  • November 2024 - The 29th meeting of the COP (Conference of the Parties) to the UNFCCC (COP29) - Side Events

    • Discussed the need for global expansion of the Carbon-Free Alliance and effective strategies
  • March 2024 - Participation in drafting of domestic CFE technical criteria

SCC (Semiconductor Climate Consortium)

Since 2022, DS Division has been serving as a founding member of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium (SCC), strengthening global leadership in addressing climate change within the semiconductor industry and working to build a sustainable business environment. The SCC has carried out a range of initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the semiconductor industry through the Governing Council and five working groups.

Within the Scope 3 working group, the division has led efforts to standardize the accounting methodology for key Scope 3 indirect emissions categories in the semiconductor industry: "Purchased Goods and Services" and "Use of Sold Products." Through these efforts, it has played a leading role in establishing guidelines that reflect the unique characteristics of the industry.

Throughout this process, DS Division has collaborated with various materials and equipment suppliers, semiconductor manufacturers, and customers both within and outside South Korea, contributing to the advancement of Scope 3 indirect emissions management across the industry and the identification of opportunities for joint emissions reductions.

  • May 2025 - Established accounting methodologies for the Scope 3 category "Use of Sold Products" within the semiconductor industry

    • Developed guidelines on methodologies for Category 11, "Use of Sold Products"
  • January 2025 - Published the "Overview of F-GHG and Nitrous Oxide Semiconductor Abatement Technologies" Scope 1 emission reduction technology white paper

    • Introduced current process gas reduction technologies and methods for measuring treatment efficiency in the semiconductor industry
  • November 2024 - Held the 2nd seminar on strengthening semiconductor industry competitiveness and improving Korea's renewable energy system

    • Collaborated with SEMI and SFOC, and the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) to discuss policy recommendations for promoting domestic renewable energy distribution
  • July 2024 - Published "Key Challenges and Potential Solutions for Expansion and Procurement of Low-Carbon Electricity in South Korea" white paper

    • Outlined key challenges and proposed potential solutions for scaling up and securing low-carbon energy in South Korea

    • Collaborated with SEMI and SFOC to discuss the current status and challenges of renewable energy procurement with the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) and the Korea Energy Agency (KEA)
  • December 2023 - Launched the SCC Energy Collaborative

    • Committed to develop a comprehensive roadmap and policy proposals for decarbonizing energy in five Asia-Pacific countries within two years

Peers and Partners

To support these initiatives, Samsung Electronics provides industry insights on net zero and resource circularity trends and government policies. The company makes policy recommendations necessary to achieve net zero emissions, including expanding affordable renewable energy supply and improving PPA-related mechanism through active participation in various associations, including the KCCI (Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry), the KEF (Korea Enterprises Federation), the FKI (Federation of Korean Industries), and the KEA (Korea Electronics Association), among others. In order to communicate effectively with the semiconductor industry and facilitate cooperation, Samsung Electronics regularly attends SEMICON. Recent developments at the event include:

Samsung Electronics has been actively engaging with key Vietnamese authorities, including the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV), and Vietnam Electricity (EVN), to introduce a renewable energy PPA mechanism in Vietnam, one of our major manufacturing locations. As a result of these efforts, a decree for DPPA was issued in 2024. We continue to communicate with stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of this mechanism.

  • 2024 onwards - Signed a PPA for solar power generation at the Vietnam manufacturing sites and sought the necessary permits and approvals

  • 2024 onwards - Proposed improvements to promote PPAs and ensure transparent operations following the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's promulgation of the DPPA Enforcement Decree in July

  • 2022-2023 - Requested expedited implementation of PPA and provided revisions and supplements to the draft framework

  • 2019-2021 - Submitted technical proposals for PPA pilot projects and expressed Samsung Electronics' intention to participate

    • Sourcing electricity from 2 MW solar power facilities installed on rooftops and parking lots at Bac Ninh manufacturing site starting July 2025
  • April 2025 - Renewable Energy PPA for Gwangju Manufacturing Site in South Korea

    • Signed a renewable energy PPA to source its electricity from solar power plants for 20 years, starting with 4 MW in April 2025 (A total of 10 MW is expected to be supplied within 2025.)
