Samsung Knox and Security Updates

Samsung Knox Vault

Pre-installed in Galaxy S21 and higher models, Samsung Knox Vault combines a Secure Processor with a brand-new security memory chip to safely protect the most important information1) in separated and isolated locations. The upcoming 2024 Galaxy A series will include Knox Vault pre-installed to protect PINs and user data with the exception of certain models such as A05. This technology has already been applied to Samsung Electronics’ 8K TVs and Smart Monitor M8 since 2023, and is CC EAL2) 6+ certified. Starting in 2025, Knox Vault will be more widely applied to Family Hub™ and other home appliances with 9-inch and 7-inch screens (such as refrigerators and washers), featuring a CC EAL5+ certified chipset.

Knox Vault provides an operating environment independent from Android OS on mobile devices and Tizen OS on TVs. This helps keep applications running safely within Knox Vault and protects user information against attacks that exploit security vulnerabilities in Rich OS, where user applications are installed.

KEEP3) (Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection)

Samsung is introducing KEEP, a new architecture designed to safeguard the next generation of personalized data as its latest innovation in mobile security. KEEP generates app-specific encrypted partitions within the device's storage to ensure data isolation, ensuring that each app can access only its own sensitive information and nothing more.

  1. PINs, passwords, biometric information, digital certificates, and security keys for mobile devices

Samsung Knox Matrix

Samsung Knox Matrix is Samsung’s vision for the future of device security, designed to protect the connected device ecosystem—from smartphones and tablets to TVs and smart home appliances—and to help safeguard data across them.

  • Security status of your devices: At any time, users can view at a glance how secure their Samsung device ecosystem is—including phones, tablets, TVs and smart home appliances. Through Trust Chain, a secure private blockchain, connected devices work together to monitor security threats.
  • Enhanced data protection: Data remains safe whether backed up on Samsung Cloud or synced across connected devices. Powerful end-to-end encryption ensures that data remains private, accessible only to the user—not even Samsung can view it when it leaves the device.
  • Recovery of data: Knox Matrix Recovery allows for the efficient restoration of data if a device is lost. It securely and privately recovers encrypted backups & synced data, and passkeys on a new device.
  • Samsung Knox Matrix features require Samsung Account login.

Mobile Security Updates

We perform regular and prompt security updates. In close collaboration with Android OS, our chipset partners, and over 200 telecommunications operators around the world, we update security patches for billions of Galaxy devices when security vulnerabilities are detected. We work with over 1,000 partners to establish security standards for all Android devices, as well as security research communities to provide the most secure mobile experiences for users.

Starting January 2024, we expanded the security update warranty for Galaxy mobile devices to up to seven years.

Models eligible for Android OS upgrades and security updates may vary by product and market.

Security Updates for Smart TVs, Smart Monitors, and Audio Products

Smart TV and monitor products launched from January 2023 will be supported with security updates for 7 years from their initial launch. We will aim to provide additional support for security patches for critical vulnerabilities even after this period, where possible.

All other Smart TVs, Smart Monitors, and audio products are guaranteed to receive security updates for 5 years from their initial launch.

Home Appliances (including Bixby Voice Assistance) Software Updates

Samsung home appliances released from January 2024 (including voice assistants (Bixby)) will support security updates for 7 years from their initial launch. We will do our best to additionally support security patches for critical security vulnerabilities even after the security update support period has ended, if possible.

All other Samsung home appliances will be supported with security updates for 5 years from their initial launch.
