How do I copy contacts between my phone, SIM Card or SD card on Samsung smartphone device?

The below steps will show you how to change where you store your contacts within your device (device storage, SIM or SD card).

The steps for transferring contacts between device storage, SIM card, or SD card will differ slightly depending on your model and operating system.

 

Choose the steps below that most closely resemble your device or click here for steps showing you how to see what operating system your device is running.

 

Devices running Android Nougat  (below)

Devices running Android Marshmallow

Devices running Android Lollipop

Devices running Android Kitkat or under

 

Devices running Android Nougat

1 From the home screen, swipe either up or down to access apps
Use two fingers to swipe either up or down on the screen of your device in order to access the Appscreen
2 Tap Contacts
Select Contacts
3 Tap menu (three dots)
Select three dot overflow menu
4 Tap Manage Contacts
Select Manage Contacts
5 Tap Import/Export Contacts
Select Import/Export Contacts menu
6 This screen will allow you to either import or export, and then will ask you to choose where to and where from.

In the below example, we will show you how to import contacts from your SIM card to your phone.

However, you can follow the same basic path based on what you need to do.  (e.g. to export instead, select EXPORT)

Import button is selected
7 Select where you wish to export or import from. In the below example, we have selected to import from the SIM card.
SIM card menu is selected
8 Tap the contacts you wish to copy or select the tick at the top of the screen to select all. Once you have selected the contacts, tap DONE

Select Done
9 Tap the option you wish to move the contacts to. In the below example, we have selected Phone
Phone menu is selected
10 Tap IMPORT or EXPORT to confirm the move.

Devices running Android Marshmallow

1 From the home screen, tap Apps
Tap Apps
2 Tap Contacts
Select Contacts
3 Tap MORE
MORE button is selected
4 Tap Settings
Tap Settings
5 Tap Import/export contacts
Import/Export Contacts menu is selected
6 Tap Import or Export, depending on which you prefer to do.

In this example, we will select Import, although the steps will be the same for both.

Import button is selected
7 Choose the place you wish to import or export your contacts from.

In this example, we are importing from the SIM card, although the steps will be the same for all.

SIM card menu is selected
8 Choose where you wish to save your contacts to
Device menu is selected
9 Choose which contacts you wish to move or click the box in the top left corner to select all
a contact is selected
10 Tap DONE
Select Done

Devices running Android Lollipop

1 From your home screen, tap Apps
Tap Apps
2 Tap Contacts
Select Contacts
3 Tap the three dots (More) in the top right corner
Select three dot overflow menu
4 Tap Settings
Tap Settings
5 Tap Contacts
Contacts menu is selected
6 Tap Import/export contacts
Import/Export Contacts menu is selected
7 You will now have a list of your options for importing or exporting contacts. In the below example, we have selected to Export to SD card, but the steps will be the same for all the options. Tap the option you wish to choose.

8 Confirm your selection
Tap OK

Devices running KitKat or under:

1 From the standby screen, tap Contacts.
2 Select Menu key.
3 Select Import/Export.
4 Depending on where you want to copy the contact, select Import form SIM Card or Export to SIM Card.
5 Check the desired Contacts, select Done.
6 Select Done at the top.
7 Select OK.
