How to remove ads from a Galaxy smartphone

Find out how to remove annoying or distracting adverts and pop-ups from your Galaxy smartphone. If you have noticed ads popping up on your lock screen, homepage or within applications on your Galaxy device this is likely to be caused by a third-party app. In order to remove these adverts, you will need to identify which app is causing the ads, then either disable the app or completely uninstall from your Galaxy device. Find out how to delete an app, by reading our FAQ How do I manage my apps? Alternatively, if the adverts are appearing in your web browser, you can block pop ups or download an Ad blocker.

Please note: Google Play permits apps to show ads as long as they comply with the Google Play policy and are displayed within the app serving them. Take care to only install reputable apps from the Google Play or Galaxy Store to avoid unwanted ads.

Check recently installed apps

If the adverts have only recently popped up on your device, you can easily search through your recently installed applications from the Google Play Store and uninstall your most recent apps until the ads no longer appear on your device.

Check recently active apps

If the ads have been popping up for a while, there are a few settings to check which apps is the cause. You can try to identify the app causing the ads by checking which apps have been recently active.

In order to show the ad, the app will have been recently active on your device. Straight after the ad appears, go to the Google Play Store to see which apps have been recently active. This should help you narrow it down, especially if it shows an app that you know you haven't used recently.

1 Launch the Play Store app.
2 Tap the Menu icon.
Tap the Menu icon
3 Tap "My apps & games".
Tap My apps & games
4 Tap "Installed".
Tap the Installed tab at the top under the title
5 Tap "Alphabetical".
Tap the word Alphabetical
6 Tap "Last used".
Choose to sort apps by Last used
7 Select one of the most recently used apps. Uninstall the app to see if the ads stop appearing on your device.

Use Safe Mode to test an app

If you would like to test whether a particular third-party application is causing the ads to appear on your device restart your device in Safe Mode.
