'Human Centric Lighting' for an Indoor Lifestyle

LED lighting has gone beyond mere convenience and energy savings, and has recently changed to technology tasked with positively impacting people's lives. This is what is commonly being referred to as ‘human centric lighting.’

Human-centric lighting is recognized as a new evolution of lighting. It is capable of improving visual comfort as well as maintaining the natural circadian rhythm by adjusting the ingredients in the lighting spectra, which can be delicately tailored for living patterns and surroundings.

Samsung Electronics entered the LED lighting market back in 2009, and noticeably continued its quest beyond conventional lighting. Samsung has continuously developed relevant technologies with a keen interest in human-centric lighting, which is the ultimate value of lighting. Over time, the company has introduced LED packages that regulate melatonin hormones to help with physical activity.

Samsung’s latest LED line-up ‘LM302N’ helps to control melatonin levels by optimizing the cyan wavelengths recognized as the most important factor in the process of melatonin secretion. It comes in 2 packages, namely ‘LM302N DAY’ and ‘LM302N NITE.’

Melatonin is well known for its influence on our sleep as well as quality of sleep. The human body activates itself by lowering the amount of melatonin during the daytime when there is an abundance of sunlight, while at night when no light comes, it promotes better sleep through melatonin secretion.

‘LM302N DAY’ helps to improve concentration by realizing the optimal spectrum at which melatonin secretion is minimized, similar to how natural light does it. This product lowers melatonin levels by an average of 18% compared to using conventional LED light, leading to better concentration in schools, offices and industrial sectors.

On the other hand, ‘LM302N NITE’ minimizes disturbances to the natural onset of the body’s melatonin production, maximizing comfort and relaxation. For example, long usage of lighting at night lowers melatonin secretion and interferes with good quality sleep. However, ‘LM302N NITE’ increases melatonin levels by an average of 5% compared to using conventional LED light, leading to better quality sleep. Imagine how effective this lighting would be in homes or hotels where we specifically go to relax.

The more we know and learn about the world of light, which affects our quality of life beyond that what we can see, the more amazing it becomes.

Q. What are some of this product’s strengths?

LEDs are light-emitting diode semiconductor components that convert electrical energy into light energy. Since it is a semiconductor component, we can control the light spectrum. This has played a major role in developing human-centric LED lighting.

Q. Based on known development information, Samsung’s human-centric lighting did not only focus on visual factors but also carefully studied factors influencing the quality of life. What was the most important factor during this product’s development?

We wanted to develop light that would be more beneficial to the human body. We didn’t want to stop at merely bright enough lights. After meticulous research we have discovered light effects proven to influence the quality of life. While maximizing the effects of light’s melatonin control capabilities, we focused on maintaining efficiency, color quality, and long product life that are musts for LEDs.

Q. What is the strongest competitive edge of Samsung’s LED Package Line-up (LM302N)?

To create light that can control melatonin, you could implement violet LEDs similar to ultraviolet (UV) to cover the cyan areas with phosphor fluorescence. But this significantly reduces energy efficiency. Also, the violet wavelength rapidly degrades LED package materials and shortens the product life. Most importantly, any short-wave blue light increase is harmful to human eyes.

Samsung’s LM302N lowers short-wave blue light and increases the proportion of low-energy cyan light without resorting to UV rays or the violet LED. This technology helps in extending LED product life and produces healthier light for people.

Q. Are there any interesting stories behind the development of this product?

At first, our team didn’t have a mutually agreed upon understanding of how exactly human-centric lighting works or should work. So, we concentrated on improving color rendering to be as identical as possible to natural light while lowering harmful shortwave blue light. However, in response to the most recent researches on human circadian rhythm and synchronization regarding a certain spectrum of light, everything has changed.

It was like opening our eyes to a whole new world, especially since we were so focused on how to make LED light sources brighter, cheaper and longer-lasting. This was followed by plenty of debate on whether to focus on eye comfort or on its invisible human circadian rhythm impact. In the end, we agreed to a well-balanced solution that would prioritize the non-visual light effects, yet also meet or exceed industry standardized levels for color quality.

Q. The future application of human-centric lighting is expected to be endless. In your opinion, which areas would benefit from LM302N the most?

The use of 'DAY' lighting in schools, offices, and workshops can help increase concentration, and the use of 'NITE' lighting at home or in hotels can help induce sleep faster and deeper. Furthermore, for patients who spend 24 hours confined to the same space, such as hospitals and nursing homes, or for older people who spend less time outside, the addition of smart lighting that varies over time will help them experience the same beneficial effects as if they were outdoors under natural light and also sleep comfortably at night. In addition, in places like yoga studios where physical relaxation is needed, our NITE lighting of any desirable color temperature will allow you to comfortably engage in physical activity even under moderately bright light.

"LM302N introduces a new concept of light source that reaches far beyond visual cognitive functions alone, it also assists with internal bodily performance. This product is in my professional and personal opinion the best solution for modern day people with a lot of indoor activities to help improve their concentration and quality of rest.”

"Samsung Electronics has been developing LED light source technology in a variety of areas, from general lighting to displays, and automotive applications. More recently, we have taken the lead in the more specialized lighting market through innovative LED product line-ups for plant growth. Starting with the launch of ‘LM302N’ which helps melatonin control, we will continue to provide ever more helpful LED light sources to our users."

So far, we have been talking about revolutionary LED human-centric technology. Now, it’s time for all of us to look forward to the incredible life changes that will be brought about by new lighting to benefit people's lives beyond visible light.
