LED TV: What Is ARC (Audio Return Channel)?

Last Update Date : Jan 09. 2018

Traditionally you have needed to run both a video and audio connection from a home theater to the TV. ARC (Audio Return Channel) changes this by eliminating the need to use two cable connections; instead all you need is one HDMI connection.

To use ARC you will need the following:

  • A High Speed 1.4 HDMI Cable
  • An ARC capable TV (displayed 'ARC' by the capable HDMI input)

  • ARC capable home theater
  • Anynet+ enabled on the TV

ARC enabled TVs and home theaters are equiped with 1.4 standard HDMI ports. The 1.4 HDMI standard added the audio return channel. By using this ARC the TV can send incoming audio from one source (For example: A cable box connected to HDMI 1) to the home theater connected to the HDMI 2 (ARC) connection. This eliminates the need for an additional optical or analog audio connection.
