Think you need a full camera kit to capture amazing photos? Think again!

With a Samsung Galaxy smartphone in hand and few tips from renowned surf photographer Rambo Estrada, we’ll have you shooting like a pro in no time.
This summer we challenged Rambo Estrada to test the cameras on our Samsung S8 and Note8 phones on a road trip around New Zealand’s best Instagram spots.
Rambo jumped at the challenge, pushing the camera hardware and software features to capture his shots in the ultimate testing ground. You can check out some of his amazing images on this page.
Ready to shoot like a pro on your Galaxy S8 or Note8? Here’s a list of easy ways to get the most out of your smartphone camera!

Tip #1 – TAKE YOUR BEST SHOT, IN ANY LIGHT

Both the Note8 and Galaxy S8 have dual pixel technology, which lets more light into the lens. What this means is that even in lower light conditions, your phone camera will be able to take clearer shots. If you’ve mastered the lowlight shot, you can play around even further with the settings in Pro Mode for more creative pictures. Try swiping right, selecting the Pro Mode and decrease the ISO levels and the shutter speed to capture amazing night
time scenes at festivals or outdoors this summer.

Rambo says: “The Note8 has dual pixel technology and an aperture of f/1.7 which lets in a lot of light, so you’ll still get nice clean images even when it’s not bright outside.”

Tip #2 – DON’T MISS THAT MOVING TARGET!

Forget blurry shots – Burst Mode allows even rookie photogs to capture fleeting moments in a blink of the eye. Both the Galaxy Note8 and Galaxy S8 cameras feature the nifty Tracking AutoFocus feature – go into settings, turn on “Tracking AF” on and the app will lock on to and keep in focus any object that you tap in the viewfinder. It also works for video.

Rambo says: Just hold the shutter button down it will fire off a sequence. Awesome for shooting action like surfing. The auto focus is amazingly fast and accurate so every shot in burst mode will be sharp.

Tip #3 – CAPTURE THE BEST SIDE OF YOUR LOVED ONES

Focus is the most important element of a great portrait, and the Samsung Galaxy cameras are packed with lots of features to make it easy to capture your favourite faces. Selective AutoFocus lets you hone in on your subject –
simply tap the screen over the subject’s face to make sure they’re kept nicely in focus. Try the Note8’s Live Focus feature for even more professional portrait shots, using a bokeh effect to blur the background to make your subject pop.

Rambo says: The live focus feature is great for portraits. Using the Dual Lens, Live Focus gives your portraits an adjustable soft background, similar to what you’d get with a full frame camera and low aperture lens.

Tip #4 – STRUCTURING YOUR COMPOSITION

How do pro photographers make their shots looks so polished? One trick is thinking about the structure and composition – think about what you want your viewer to see, and how to frame that central feature. A good way for beginners to start structuring better shots is to try shooting in thirds – foreground, midground and background. Jump into the settings of your Galaxy smartphone and switch on 3 x 3 gridlines to help guide you in lining up that killer shot. Still not nailing it? Try asking friends or a photographer for advice on how to improve.

Rambo says: “I was lucky to have someone who’d give me that honest constructive criticism. Knowing where and how you can improve is the fast track to becoming a better photographer.”

Q&A with Rambo Estrada

Samsung:

WHY WERE YOU EXCITED TO WORK WITH SAMSUNG ON THE SHOOT LIKE A PRO CAMPAIGN?

Rambo:

I’ve always embraced new technology. I love testing the capabilities of a camera and pushing it to the limit. I wasintrigued to see how good the S8 and Note8 phone cameras are. I was keen to challenge myself and see just what sort of images I could produce from a phone too. Being able to shoot with a phone in the water* also had me amped.

Samsung:

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT A WEEK ON THE ROAD WITH ONLY A PHONE?

Rambo:

I was pretty excited to leave my heavy backpack of camera gear at home and have everything I needed in my pocket!Taking a chopper into the mountains in Wanaka armed only with a phone definitely felt a bit weird, but when it came to actually shooting it was refreshing to just concentrate on what was in front of me like light and composition rather than getting distracted by a big kit of camera gear.

Samsung:
WHAT FEATURE DID YOU LIKE THE MOST ON THE GALAXY SMARTPHONES?

Rambo:
The ability to take it into the water for sure!* People are used to seeing me swimming around with a big camera housing and everyone was freaking that I was out there with a phone and no waterproof case. I even emailed some shots to a buddy straight from the line-up ha ha.

I was really impressed by the low-light capabilities. It was easy to shoot handheld on dusk and the images maintained great detail throughout the shadows without any noise.
