How do I use Wi-Fi on my Samsung Galaxy S5?

Wi-Fi is a wireless connectivity feature that allows you to connect Wi-Fi-enabled devices to share information or to connect to the internet.



Turning Wi-Fi on and off


1.    Open the Quick Panel by swiping two fingers (held slightly apart) from the top of the screen to the bottom.


2.    Touch the Wi-Fi icon to turn Wi-Fi on or off. When Wi-Fi is on the device will scan for and automatically connect to any previously connected access points.



Connect to a Wi-Fi network 

1.    From the Home screen, touch Apps Apps .


2.    Touch Settings Settings .


3.    Touch Wi-Fi WiFi .


4.    Under Wi-Fi networks touch the network to which you wish to connect.


5.    Enter the wireless password if necessary.


6.    Touch Connect.



Manually add your network connection. 

1.    From the Home screen touch Apps Apps .


2.    Touch Settings Settings .


3.    Touch Wi-Fi WiFi .


4.    Touch Add Wi-Fi network.


5.    Enter the Network SSID. This is the name of the network to which you wish to connect.


6.    Select the Security level of the network. If you select a security level that does not match your access point you will not be able to connect.


7.    If the network is secured you will also need to enter its password.


8.    Touch Connect to store the new information and connect to the network.





Wi-Fi advanced settings 


Follow the steps below to change advanced Wi-Fi settings.


1.    From the Home screen touch Apps Apps .


2.    Touch Settings Settings .


3.    Touch Wi-Fi Wifi .


4.    Touch More options MoreOptions> Advanced.

  • Network notification: Receive a notification when an open Wi-Fi network is available.
  • Passpoint: Let your device connect to passpoint-enabled W-Fi access points automatically.
  • Sort by: List the available networks in alphabetical order or by signal strength.
  • Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Specify whether your device should continue to stay connected to Wi-Fi when your device goes to sleep.
  • Always allow scanning: Allow apps to scan for available wireless networks even when Wi-Fi is disabled.
  • Auto connect: When a Wi-Fi hotspot for your network is availalble your device will automatically connect to it if this feature is turned on.
  • Install certificates: Install network certificates stored on the memory card.
  • MAC address: This is a unique number assigned to your device's Wi-Fi transmitter.
  • IP address: View the IP address assinged to you by the Wi-Fi access point you are connected to.


Wi-Fi options


From the Wi-Fi wifimenu touch More options morefor the following options:

  • Scan: Scan for available Wi-Fi networks.
  • Wi-Fi Direct: Touch Wi-Fi Direct to turn on the feature and connect to available Wi-Fi Direct devices. Wi-Fi Direct enables Wi-Fi devices to connect to each other directly (or to a group of several devices), allowing you to quickly and easily share content.
  • WPS push button: Connect directly with your wireless router using the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your router.
  • WPS PIN entry: Connect directly with your wireless router by entering the randomly generated PIN on your device.
  • Help: View information on how to connect to a Wi-Fi network.


Smart network switch


Place a check mark next to Smart network switch at the top of the Wi-Fi screen to automatically switch between Wi-Fi and mobile networks to help maintain a more stable connection. Turning this feature on could result in additional charges from your mobile network provider as a result of increased data usage.
