Enhancing the Value of Alluxio with Samsung NVMe SSDs

Samsung has collaborated with Alluxio to contribute a key enabling feature

Alluxio, formerly Tachyon, is the world's first system which unifies data at memory speeds while achieving affordability through Alluxios innovative tiered storage functionality. This paper shows how Alluxio’s storage can be used with different storage media available in systems including NVME SSDs while providing in‐line performance consistent with the speed of the underlying storage media. Alluxio provides the capability to leverage all the storage that is available in a system.

Samsung has collaborated with Alluxio to contribute a key enabling feature, Alluxio‐2404, enabling Alluxio to write directly to any tier of storage. Samsung has conducted experiments exercising this feature and measured the throughput of Alluxio’s system against DDR3 dynamic random access memory (DRAM), Samsung NVME SSDs, and Samsung SATA SSDs. Resulting in Alluxio delivery of I/O bandwidth reaching multiple 10s of GBs/second for DRAM and for NVMe‐based storage, while achieving 2‐3GB/second throughput for SATA‐based storage on a single node. Our results also demonstrate that even I/O‐bound applications can be saturated with a few higher‐speed SSDs.

In addition, Alluxio improves storage performance for the Hadoop ecosystem by multiple orders of magnitude. All in the interest of affordably scaling beyond the confines of memory, while delivering both performance and scalability through tiering data across several classes of storage media, such as hard drives and higher‐performing SSDs.
