On December 1st, South Korea’s major mobile carriers launched the world’s first commercial 5G mobile network service in Korea. In celebrations, the carriers have introduced and demonstrated diverse 5G services such as an AI machine vision solution, intelligent guidance robot platform, and even test-ran self-driving car over the network. In addition, a live video call was made between Samsung’s 5G smartphone prototypes over the 5G network. A video conference was also demoed with a laptop connected to a Samsung 5G Mobile Hotspot that delivers 5G connectivity via 3.5GHz spectrums and supports 4G LTE and WLAN.

For incredibly fast 5G connectivity, both the prototype smartphone and the mobile hotspot are powered by Samsung’s advanced 5G modem, Exynos Modem 5100, that is fully compliant with 5G NR defined by 3GPP’s Release 15. The modem supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimeter Wave) spectrum bands for extremely fast, massive and reliable data connection to realize 5G’s essential features that includes eMBB(ehnhanced Mobile Broadbqlalfand), mMTC(massive Machine-type Commnication) and URLLC(Ultra Reliable & Low Latency Communication). Exynos Modem 5100 is a multi-mode modem that supports 5G NR as well as diverse legacy major modes from 2G to 4G LTE including GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, HSPA, LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD in a single chip. By supporting the 5G and the legacy modes, the modem allows mobile devices to operate more efficiently while crossing networks from legacy mode to 5G and vice-versa. Samsung will continue to work closely with partners and service providers to deliver innovative 5G mobile technology that will revolutionize the communication technology industry.
